welcome

It is often said that life’s a journey. Indeed, each and every one of us has taken a different path that has shaped the person we are and the life we live. Some of us have been here, others there; some of us have done this while others have done that; one of us has accomplished one thing while somebody else has achieved another.

With limited time in our lives, we can’t possibly do it all; but most of us enjoy hearing from someone who has experienced something that we have only dreamed of doing. What was it like? How did it feel? How nervous were you? Truthfully, few of us can raise our hands in a group and say that we’ve rafted the Colorado River. But for those of us who haven’t, it can be a lot of fun to learn about the road—or river—not taken.

Yet somewhere along life’s highway our paths have converged. We have shared the same experience, done the same thing, been to the same place. Discovering that another person shares a part of who we are brings about a sense of connected-ness . . . as well as a wonderful opportunity for great conversation! Let’s be honest: It’s fun to talk with someone else who, like ourselves, went through the experience of locking the keys in the car. We value common ground.

Have You Ever . . . is a collection of 450 questions that gives you the opportunity to discover what others have done and how their lives differ or equate with your own. At the same time, it affords each of us the chance to talk about ourselves, to “brag” a little. All the questions have been carefully designed to be enter taining and noncontroversial; you can feel comfortable using our book with family, friends, children . . . even people you’ve just met.

In addition to learning about others, you’ll learn a lot about who you are in the process of perusing this book. What have you done that you had forgotten about? What haven’t you done that you still hope to accomplish? You’ll uncover the answers to these and many other questions as you weave your way through the thought-provoking pages of Have You Ever . . .

Some suggestions for playing Have You Ever . . . are on pages 1 to 3.

a special note to our readers

None of the questions in this book has been created to be an end in itself; rather, each query is designed to serve as a jumping-off point for further conversation. For example, instead of simply answering “no” to question #29 and moving on, pause for a moment . . . and think about the types of silly mishaps that have happened to you. Soon you’ll be talking about the time you slammed your finger in the door or dropped that heavy box on your foot. For question #6, don’t dismiss the question if you haven’t spent an October in Vermont; instead, talk about that spring azalea festival you experienced in the South, or the memorable snowy Christmas you spent at Vail. Have You Ever . . . should always be used to enhance your conversations, not restrict them!
