Head Above Water asks the question - how much would you sacrifice for love?
What people are saying about Head Above Water:
"I have to tell you, I'm an avid reader and book clubber and I have never read a book like this. There's so much detail and imagination! I can appreciate that it was a love story sprinkled with a little science fiction. I'm not really into romance novels honestly, but this book worked for me; mostly because I could relate to the characters and bits and pieces of Darryl and Leena's relationship. Who hasn't been crazy in love at least once in their life?" - Kim Bailey
"I recommend this book, even if you're not a regular romance genre reader. It has something for everyone." - Julie Harris
"...Wow, well, I don't really know where to begin with this review, except to say that this book is very original and it definitely surprised me in terms of how the story progressed and in terms of the almost experimental styling of the book.
This is not your everyday romance novel. Yes, it contains romance and is written well; the dialogue between the characters is fluid and realistic. All the characters are believable, and one thing this author suceeds in doing where many others fail, is in reminding us that we are all human and all capable of making wrong choices and hurting others inadvertently by our actions." - Maria Savva

Although I have read my fair share of romance novels, this one has a bit of fantasy/science fiction woven in and out of its pages. From the moment you start reading, you feel like you know how the book will end. Darryl and Leena are people you know, or even parts of yourself. When you're in love, you just do things that feel crazy. Darryl and Leena do "crazy" things, and in the end, the unexpected happens. I recommend this book, even if you're not a regular romance genre reader. It has something for everyone.
Head Above Water exemplifies how love should really be; Loving someone in spite of their flaws and imperfections, willing to trade in your soul just so they can live, and making sacrifices just so you can be with your "love" in the after life. This is the true essence of love that has somehow been lost over the last generation or so. I sheded a few tears while reading HAW and this tells me that Ben is in tune with his readers by touching sensitive points that we all experience a time or two within the course of our lives. It is a "feel good" read about love with a twist of fantasy as we ALL have our personal fantasies about the love that we wish to have. So if you haven't done so already, get your copy of HAW and prepare to get lost in a world mixed with passion, tragedy and the true meaning of FOREVER AFTER!
I love a good love story and this was a great read, especially with a twinge of supernatural mixed in. The main male character, Darryl, was very likable. His relationship with his grandmother was very tender and caring, which segued into his passion and love for Leena. I really enjoyed that part of the story the most…Darryl’s intense feelings. I feel weird saying I liked the main female character the least. It wasn’t that I didn’t like Leena. It was that I didn’t like some of her choices. I don’t want to say too much without giving parts of the book away but she was willing to give up a love of a lifetime for no good reason and those choices basically led to catastrophic events. But, as in any work of fiction, there must be conflicts or else what is the point of the story? Overall, as I mentioned before, I really thought this was a well-thought out book and would definitely recommend it as a must read. Enjoy!
