If I can save
A single human life
In my own life,
There's a chance
I will have helped
Another species
Go extinct.

I should have thought of this
Before I wrote a book
In hopes that people would be happy
When they bought and read a copy.
Sorry, species.

Then again,
If I can help
A lot of humans catch their breath,
We might stop tearing up the Earth
To find a cure for life and death.

There is no cure for life and death.
There is no one without the both.
There is no hope
I'll write a better book description
Than its title is.
I might as well just drop this
and move on to the synopsis.

Life's a you-know-what.
People fall in ruts.
We think our lives are over while we live them.
Our universal game
is to hunt for who's to blame
until the universe itself is unforgiven.

Now and then a human
who spies a space to bloom in
is gifted with uplifted points of view
that help us see beyond the skies
and the fear behind our eyes.
In this book, I share my blooming space with you.

Reviewed by Romuald Dzemo for Readers' Favorite Help for Hysterical Humans Who Hope to Be Happy in Heaven or Here by James Sterngram is a powerful collection of poems intended to be a "course in happiness” ― to use the author's words ― but the reader will immediately discover that this collection is more than a course; in fact, it is a guide to awareness, a lens through which reality can be seen even better, and a composition that will enlighten readers to bring out the smile hidden beneath their tears, recalling that life can be transformed into an instance of song. The message of this poetry is universal, timeless, and it bursts forth naturally like the clear waters of a running brook from which the thirsty can drink, because it forces the reader to pause and savor the somewhat neglected sense of wonder that enriches our humanity. In the opening lines of this beautifully written and inspiring poetry, the poet invites all and sundry to join at his table for a feast, and thereby begins an engaging conversation in a language that is as simple as it is symbolic. For example, “Instants are the brightest gems, / and millions are created / in the crush of every day…” (For Instants). Help for Hysterical Humans Who Hope to Be Happy in Heaven or Here by James Sterngram overflows with a novel kind of witticism and drunkenness that lovers of poetry, as well as those looking for words that inspire, will find interesting. He writes about common realities in a style that sings to the soul, and that will, most definitely, help readers change perspective, find meaning, and alter the way they look at life. It is riveting, enlightening, and, above all, highly entertaining – a real book of timeless wisdom that gives a name to absurdity.
