CHAPTER 1

Injera bread. That's all she really wants before she leaves the house. And a kiss from Ma.

A sip of milk later and the whisper of a girl begins her walk to the far away place, a million kilometers away.

"Farewell, stone hearth. Goodbye to you, porridge," she waves as her skirt sweeps the pebbles from her ankles.

She walks on, brothers left behind. Ma, with her swollen belly and tired, warm eyes.

Cattle moan as she walks on, eyelashes waving. Dust kisses her cheek, rocks crunch beneath her feet.

Maybe Ma's baby will be a girl. A girl will help. A girl will walk.

Sun cuts through her shawl. Merciless, it preys on her soft, copper skin. She walks.

Little girls clasp sisters' hands, like a rope tied in a loose knot, walking the path. Walking.

A lonely jeep passes. She blinks, as gravel grumbles beneath the tires. Look straight ahead. Walk.
