Rich Hill grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, hitchhiked across the country, worked on the Great Lakes freighters as a deckhand, and operated several retail businesses. He is also the author of "Lake Effect: A Deckhand's Journey on the Great Lakes Freighters."
