Herbal drugs have a prolonged history of frequent use and documentation in texts of established systems of medicine indigenous to a particular country. There is a great demand for these medicines in the developed as well as developing countries because of their wide biological activities, higher safety margin than the synthetic drugs and lesser costs. Since these medicines are prepared from materials of plant origin they are prone to, deterioration and variation in composition. Extremely limited knowledge about the ingredients in the herbal drug formulations and their effects in humans, the lack of stringent quality control and the heterogeneous nature of these preparations all necessitate the continuous monitoring of the safety of the herbal products. The World Health Organization has recognized the importance of traditional medicine and has created strategies, guidelines and standards for botanical medicines. It is necessary to develop methods for rapid precise and accurate identification and estimation of active constituents in order to bring out consistency of important constituents in the formulations. In present volume Quality Control and Standardization of the book series Compendium of Bioactive natural Products an attempt has been made to cover the recent progress in standardization of the herbal/ traditional drugs and strategies adopted for quality assurance. The book is not only an excellent source material for the scientists and teachers but also for research workers working on different aspects of bioactive natural products and comprises fourteen original research papers/review articles, and we believe, it shall receive an overwhelming response from our esteemed readers hailing from various corners across the globe.

About the Author

Dr. Vinod D. Rangari has completed his graduation and post graduation from Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nagpur University, Nagpur. He has worked as Senior Research Scholar for his Ph.D. at Regional Research Laboratory (CSIR), Jammu, under the guidance of world renowned Pharmacognosist, Prof. Dr. C.K. Atal. Dr. Rangari has delivered his valuable services on various academic positions at College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Udaipur; NDMVP’s College of Pharmacy, Nashik; Bharati Vidyapeeth’s Poona College of Pharmacy, Pune; J.S.S. College of Pharmacy, Mysore and APMC College of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Himmatnagar, Gujarat. Presently he is working as a Principal and Professor of Pharmacognosy at J.L. Chaturvedi College of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Nagpur. Dr. Rangari’s major fields of research interest are herbal drug research, standardization of crude drug and phytochemistry. He has authored two books entitled “Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry”, Part I and Part II which are reffered by pharmacy students all over the country. He has presented several research papers in various conferences and has published number of quality research papers in national and international journals. He is a post graduate teacher, Ph.D. Guide and member of Board of Studies in R.T.M. Nagpur University, Nagpur.



Mr. Rahul K. Dumbre, has completed his M. Pharm studies from Bharati Vidyapeeth’s Poona College of Pharmacy, Pune, on a research project entitled “Phytochemical and immunomodulatory activity studies of herbal drug formulation for treatment and management of AIDS”. He further continued his research for three years with Agarkar Research Institute, Pune and National Centre for Cell Sciences, Pune. Mr. Dumbre has delivered his services for about four years at SGRS College of Pharmacy, Saswad, Pune and Rajgad Dyanpeeth’s College of Pharmacy, Bhor, Pune. He is currently working as assistant professor at Siddhant College of Pharmacy, Sudumbre, Pune, India.
