Honor and Lies
When 14-year-old Sissy discovers she's not simply the dark skinned friend of the Davis family, she's devastated. The truth destroys everything she's ever known about herself.
Raised in the house as a playmate to the Davis daughter, Sissy's been educated in books not in skills that will get her through the rough life she now knows awaits her. Still, Sissy takes a job in the kitchens, facing the persecution of other slaves and the sun-up-to-sun-down work in the hottest place on the plantation.
Savannah Davis, the 14-year-old rebel who believes in abolition and espouses Northern doctrine whenever she gets the chance, doesn't understand her sudden emotional turmoil over right and wrong.
Deliverance...Or not? Both girls are forced to decide whether they will pursue their dreams or let them die at a time when death becomes all too real. Set against the backdrop of the time directly before the Civil War, Honor and Lies is a dual coming-of-age story of family, loss and love.

About the Author

First Amendment lovin' Texan wife, mother, teacher, writer, low-carb living zumba backslider, addicted to RHONJ, TLC Bride shows and Zesty Italian commercials.
I talk a lot and blog a lot and write a lot and tweet a lot. My husband wishes I'd clean a lot, but he loves me anyway. I love my day job. I'm a public education advocate and activist and true education reformer. Don't even get me started about testing and politicians and what they've done to the schools the last two decades.
I got guilted into serving in the children's ministry at my church. I don't like kids until they're about 10 unless they're my own. Kids don't usually like me until they're about 10 either. Babies cry when they see me. I think they know I'm scared. So back to the children's ministry and guilt...that happened. And I love it. I serve with 2nd-5th graders. They rock. And they like me all right, too.
I love low carb everything. Changing my life to a low-carb lifestyle has resulted in an almost 70 pound weight loss.
My name is now three easy names, but I was born Mary Beth Hagberg. When you move to Texas with the last name Hagberg, prepare for harassment. The name was like Smith in Minnesota, but where I live now...yeah. Not.
My dad wanted to name me Beth, but my mom said no because she died in Little Women. I love Little Women. It was the first big book I read, and I've loved it ever since. I still cry when Beth dies.
I read everything: cereal boxes, shampoo bottles, Nora, SEP, THE DRESDEN FILES (ohmigosh, if you have not read Dresden, quit reading this and go do so now.)
I write under two names. This one and my mainstream romance pen name Liz Lee. Don't check those out if you're afraid of steam. I'm told they're smoking. I think that's a compliment. I told my hubby I was getting him a shirt that says "My wife writes steamy romance. I'm the inspiration." He liked that idea.

My Mary Beth Lee books are Young Adult and Inspirational. I keep the names separate so people don't go looking for Dr Pepper and get sweet tea. My current heroine is Sharlene Gallagher. She's a Guardian Angel in training. She has to solve murders before they happen. I LOVE writing those books. I love Sharlene. :)
I enjoy comments from readers. If you want to drop me a line, check out my blog.

Mary Beth Lee is a student media adviser in North Texas where she lives with her husband and dog.
