Description: This is the fifth edition of a book on pulmonary function tests and interpretations that has become a classic with pulmonologists, fellows, and respiratory therapists. The accompanying website contains mostly figures and tables from the book for ready reference, and readers can opt to use Microsoft Anna if text to voice is preferred. The previous edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: The purpose is to make pulmonary function tests user friendly, and the book covers all aspects of pulmonary function testing in the context of disease processes and diagnoses. Given the numerous pulmonary diseases and effects on pulmonary function testing, the images and tables on the website provide a handy, online reference. The book and the online components meet the objectives.
Audience: The book is written for pulmonologists, fellows, and other healthcare practitioners such as respiratory therapists who do pulmonary function testing. The authors are unquestionably experts in pulmonary function testing. One of the authors, Dr. Hyatt, father of the widely used flow-volume loop, died as this book was being updated, and Dr. Scanlon has taken great pains to preserve Dr. Hyatt's writing style.
Features: The book covers the principles, indications, rationales, measurements, normal values for pulmonary function testing, and, most importantly, how to interpret the tests and what the results mean. The authors make the unequivocal case in the introduction that most primary care physicians do not routinely order pulmonary function tests as many are uncomfortable interpreting the results. Assessment: This is the book for clinicians looking for a complete reference on pulmonary function testing. It is well written and current, using ATS/ERS testing standards.
