I read this complete series many years ago and could not wait for it to come out for my nook so that I could have it with me forever. I still have most of the hard cover books I read years ago. This is a great series for both young and old that you will truly remember in years to come. These books combine history with romance and is truly a series you will want to add to your collection.

Howard Fast has ability to take the reader to places and paint history in a very unique manner. He is sympathetic to his characters, and writes with great passion. Dan Lavett is the central character in the 'Immigrants', and the book follows his struggle to climb the heights of Nob Hill and his fall from power. The book covers the end of the nineteenth century to WWII. A great read.

I read The Immigrants several decades ago, but seized the opportunity to acquire it for my nook. Howard Fast was a great storyteller. Once you begin the series, you are hooked to continue finding out what happens to these people and their descendants. This is a Must Read!

This is the story of Dan Lavette, the son of Italian immigrants. He is born in a box car on a train, winding up in San Francisco. It is a story of dreams, of the American dream. The rise of men in the land of milk and honey. I couldn't put this book down! It moves very quickly from about 1850 to 1934. The author wastes no time on trivial points, and doesn't fill pages with descriptions of surroundings. The dialog is believable and I felt like I was watching the story instead of reading it. I can see why his books get made into movies. Don't be misled, the story does not read like a screen play! Even when you think you know whats going to happen next, you cant wait to turn the page! If you like historical fiction...you will LOVE The Immigrants

I love multi-generation stories and this is one that really took me into the family and time period. Can't wait to read the next book.

Good read. Fast's novels are never disappointing. Spartacus was the best of them.
