Description: This is the fourth edition of a well-organized, clear, and concise book on the practice of infectious diseases. This edition offers access to an online version that is easy to navigate, has high quality images, and offers links to references.
Purpose: The book is dedicated to understanding, preventing, and treating infectious diseases. The scope is broad. After a few minutes of reading, any general practitioner without immediate access to an infectious disease specialist can assess a patient's syndrome, make a differential diagnosis, and get excellent guidance in the appropriate testing and management. The online version greatly enhances the value of the book by adding interactive features.
Audience: The authors are experts in their areas (such as sepsis and multidrug resistant bacteria). They do not all practice in the U.S., which brings fresh, global insights into diagnosis and management. To some infectious disease specialists, the content may seem rudimentary, but they will change their opinion once they see the online version. However, the audience is general practitioners such as trainees (including infectious disease fellows), physician extenders, emergency room physicians, hospitalists, and practitioners in outpatient settings who are taking care of patients where there is concern about infectious diseases.
Features: The book covers syndromes by body system, special problems in infectious disease practice, infections in the immunocompromised host, HIV, international medicine, anti-infective therapy, and clinical microbiology.
