About the Author

Gerald L. Glandon, PhD, is professor and chair of the Department of Health Services Administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He is the interim program director for the Health Informatics Program and directs the Center for Health Services Continuing Education at UAB. Dr. Glandon has had a career in research, health administration education, and academic administration. His primary research interests have been technology evaluation (especially IT), the economics of aging, patient and physician satisfaction, and assessment of organizational performance. He has published in such journals as JAMA, Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences, Medical Care, Hospital & Health Services Administration, and Health Services Research as well as written numerous books and book chapters. Over the years, Dr. Glandon has kept his research and practice skills current by consulting with academic health centers, external agencies, and organizations. He has also worked in international health with engagements in Albania, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia. He has both developed and delivered management education in these countries and provided healthcare strategic analysis to ministries of health and to individual hospitals. Prior to coming to UAB, he was program director of the Department of Health Systems Management at Rush-Presbyterian–St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago.
Detlev H. (Herb) Smaltz, PhD, FACHE, FHIMSS, is chairman, founder, and former CEO of Health Care DataWorks, Inc., an Ohio State University Technology Commercialization Company. Health Care DataWorks is a provider of enterprise data warehouse and business intelligence tools and strategic enterprise business intelligence consulting services. Dr. Smaltz served as the chief information officer of the Ohio State University Medical Center (OSUMC), where he led an IT organization of 255 individuals with an annual operating budget of $42 million. He also served as an associate vice president for health sciences at OSUMC, leading collaborative initiatives between the three mission areas of the medical center: research, academics, and patient care. In addition, he was an adjunct professor at Capital College, Laurel, Maryland; an associate professor at University of Alabama at Birmingham; and a professor at Ohio State University, Columbus. He has more than 25 years’ experience in healthcare management, serving all but four of those years as CIO/CKO at various-sized organizations. He is a Fellow of the Healthcare Information & Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and served on the HIMSS Board of Directors (BOD) from 2002 to 2005 and as vice chair of the BOD from 2004 to 2005. In addition, he is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE). Dr. Smaltz holds certifications in knowledge management from the Knowledge Management Certification Board. He earned a BS in management information systems from the University of Tampa, an MBA from Ohio State University, and a PhD in information and management science from Florida State University. He has co-written a number of publications, including Austin & Boxerman’s Information Systems for Healthcare Management, 7th Edition (Health Administration Press, 2008); The Healthcare Information Technology Planning Fieldbook (HIMSS Publications, 2008); The Executive’s Guide to Electronic Health Records (Health Administration Press, 2007); and The CEO–CIO Partnership: Harnessing the Value of Information Technology in Healthcare (HIMSS Publications, 2005).
Donna J. Slovensky, PhD, RHIA, FAHIMA, is professor and associate dean for Student and Academic Affairs in the School of Health Professions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She holds secondary appointments in the Department of Management in the UAB School of Business and the UAB Graduate School. She is named as a scientist with the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education and as a scholar in the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy. Dr. Slovensky has consulting experience in a variety of healthcare organizations, including inpatient and ambulatory facilities, home health programs, and physician practices, and academic programs. She has been on the UAB faculty for more than 35 years, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in strategic management, quality management, information management, and clinical outcomes evaluation before her current administrative role.
