Description: This is an introduction to the concepts of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the application of analytics to the data, including aspects of data storage and model derivation.
Purpose: The purpose is to present systems and structures related to IoT to encourage development and application of IoT in healthcare, including use of big data so generated. These are worthy objectives as new approaches to risk analysis and event detection may help improve patient outcomes and, in some scenarios, have already been shown to achieve health outcomes improvements. The book provides information in support through selected examples for further development of IoT in healthcare.
Audience: This intended audience is professionals contemplating direct involvement in IoT data in healthcare, which would include engineers, data scientists, and some clinical informaticians who are interested in development and application of IoT technology.
Features: The book covers IoT in healthcare beginning at devices and sensors, to data storage examples, to predictive analytics and modeling in a healthcare context. Further, aspects of privacy and security are addressed, as is potential further translation of IoT in the existing healthcare environment. Some highlights include specific IoT examples in the existing clinical care arena and other project examples addressing specific use cases for data capture, storage, and analysis. Clarity is helped with examples from robotics and then power supply design of small sensors. Shortcomings arise from the absence of an index; readers must navigate solely using the table of contents. Wording and tense structures are also clumsy at times and are not consistently grammatically correct, although the intent is typically clear. Some of the images (nice examples with sensor data related to falls) are blurred. There are no color illustrations.
Assessment: Overall, the book is useful for someone looking to investigate topics related to the use of IoT in healthcare. The chapters may be read more as articles than a typically indexed book, as there is no index. A number of the real-world examples are helpful and provide a picture beginning at data collection and sensor design considerations, security/privacy, storage, modeling, analysis and application in healthcare.
