Description: The sixth edition of this book covers all aspects of computer literacy for healthcare professionals — word processing, digital presentations, databases, and charts. New activities, algorithms, and charts throughout offer greater opportunities for students to comprehend and retain information.
Purpose: The purpose is to train healthcare professionals to be computer literate in order to improve patient safety and care. With the ongoing changes in healthcare, a book like this is needed. Electronic medical records are becoming the standard and healthcare professionals must know how to use this software effectively. However, whether this sixth edition is needed is debatable. I don't believe there is enough new information to justify this update.
Audience: The audience includes both healthcare students and healthcare professionals. All practitioners involved with patient care, directly or indirectly, can benefit.
Features: The book thoroughly covers presentations, spreadsheets, databases, charts, technology-based communication, and distance education to name just a few topics. It does a good job of presenting the information in an easy-to-understand manner. Beyond the excellent delivery, the activities in this book are what take it up a notch. The shortcoming is that not enough has changed to justify a sixth edition (for example, word processing).
Assessment: This is an easy-to-follow, comprehensive guide to computers for healthcare professionals. The wide variety of topics makes it a staple for healthcare students as well as established professionals. However, owners of the previous edition probably do not need to acquire this update.
