Atunci cind femeia devine victima unei erori judiciare stupide, Nehliudov nu-si mai poate urma traiul luxos si lipsit de griji, ci decide sa renunte la tot si s-o urmeze, pentru a o salva cu orice pret, potolindu-si astfel chinuitorul sentiment de vinovatie pentru soarta ei tragica. "Invierea" este un tablou vast al Rusiei de sfirsit de secol XIX, in care imaginea celulelor mizere de inchisoare se suprapune peste bogatia stralu­citoarelor palate nobiliare; romanul reprezinta in acelasi timp o critica plina de indignare la adresa sistemului de guvernamint, a justitiei si a Bisericii.

A Russian author of novels, short stories, plays, and philosophical essays, Count Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was born into an aristocratic family and is best known for the epic books War and Peace and Anna Karenina, regarded as two of the greatest works of Russian literature. After serving in the Crimean War, Tolstoy retired to his estate and devoted himself to writing, farming, and raising his large family. His novels and outspoken social polemics brought him world-wide fame.
