Overview

In Iron Hans a series of huntsmen disappear in a mysterious forest. It is eventually discovered that an iron-skinned man is dragging passersby into the lake where he lives. The man is captured by the king and subsequently released by a sympathetic prince, who then must flee the kingdom. The prince, with the help of the iron-skinned man defeats an army and wins the hand of a princess. The prince is reunited with his parents and Iron Hans is revealed to be a normal man who was under a spell and released from it by the prince who was found to be pure of heart.

About the Author

Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859), were German academics and authors who collected and published folk tales during the 19th century. They popularized such stories as Cinderella, The Frog Prince, Hansel and Gretel, and Snow White. Their first collection of folk tales, Children's and Household Tales was published in 1812.

This elaborate pageant is sparked by a Grimm tale not often seen in picture-book form. A king's son fails in a task set for him by the wild man Iron Hans, who exiles the boy from his forest home with a promise to come to his aid when called. Though disguised as a gardener's boy, the prince woos and wins a princess, thanks to Iron Hans's magical help and his own fully developed virtue. Heyer ( The Weaving of a Dream ) illustrates this symbolic story with luxuriously detailed, dreamlike tableaux. Distinctive, meticulously drawn borders (often featuring what seems to be marbelized paper) first appear as a frame for the text. In the wordless double-page spreads that alternate with the narrative, the decorative borders reappear as a setting for large-scale pencil illustrations. These frames echo the story's subject matter, becoming increasingly elaborate and culminating with a pair of organ-playing angels that flank the prince's triumphant wedding. All ages. (Oct.)

Taken away from his parents at age eight by the dangerous wild man Iron Hans (actually a king under a wicked enchantment), a little prince fails Iron Hans' trials and is sent to make his way in the world. Taking a position as gardener in a palace, he soon wins the heart of the princess and with the help of Iron Hans and his own boldness, the prince leads an army into battle and wins her hand in marriage as well. Readers may wonder when the boyish prince grew into the manly warrior, a transformation the text ignores and the illustrations deal with by aging him a few years with each turn of the page. Technically proficient though curiously detached from the tale, the color-pencil drawings decorate the long text with ornate borders and dramatic full-page spreads. Libraries with demand for illustrated versions of the Grimms' individual fairy tales should consider this one.
