Chapter One

Isabella and her parents are taking a walk through Mill Pond Park.

Isabella notices people walking dogs.

"Mommy, can I please have a puppy?" asks Isabella.

"Having a puppy is a big RESPONSIBILITY, Isabella," says mommy.

"What's RESPONSIBILITY?" asks Isabella.

"Well, RESPONSIBILITY is when you have to take care of something, like how daddy and I take care of you," replies mommy.

"If I take care of my puppy like you and daddy take care of me can I please get one?" asks Isabella.

"We can go to the pet store tomorrow and look for one," says mommy.

Isabella hardly slept that night. She was so excited to find her new puppy.

The next day, Isabella, mommy, and daddy set out for the pet store. When they arrive, there are so many dogs to choose from. There are big dogs, medium sized dogs, and little dogs.

"I want a little puppy and name her Lucy," says Isabella.

"Oh, what a pretty name," says mommy.

Isabella sees a little black puppy with white under its chin. She runs to the window and presses her nose against the glass.

Isabella knows she has found her puppy. It is love at first sight.

She sits down in a small room and holds the puppy in her arms.

"I love you little puppy, would you like to come home with me?" Isabella says.

The puppy licks her face and cuddles her.

"I am going to call you Lucy," says Isabella.

Mommy and daddy buy the puppy. They must also buy puppy food, a dog dish, a dog bed, some toys, shampoo, and a dog brush. "Wow, there is a lot of stuff to buy when you get a new puppy," says Isabella.

It is lunch time when they return home.

"I'm hungry, can we please have lunch now?" asks Isabella.

"This will be your first lesson in RESPONSIBILITY. Lucy needs to eat too. You have to feed Lucy so she can get big and strong just like you," says mommy.

Isabella rushes over to Lucy's bowls and gives her food and water.

"Okay mommy, it's my turn now. I'm hungry," says Isabella. Isabella and Lucy both eat their lunch.

After lunch, Isabella wants to go outside to play.

"Mommy, can I please go out and play?" asks Isabella.

"Yes, Isabella, but you have to take your puppy out to play, too. This is your second lesson in RESPONSIBILITY. Lucy needs to run and play so she can have lots of exercise like you," says mommy.

Isabella takes Lucy outside. The two chase each other around the yard for a long time. They both become very tired.

Mommy calls Isabella in for a nap. "Time for your nap, Isabella," says mommy.

Isabella and Lucy run into the house, exhausted.

Lucy cuddles with Isabella and the two of them quickly fall asleep.

Later that evening, it was time for Isabella's bath. Isabella loves bath time.

"Mommy, can Lucy take a bath with me?" asks Isabella.

"No, but we can give Lucy her own bath. Get the shampoo we bought at the pet store and we will bathe her together. This is your third lesson in RESPONSIBILITY. Lucy needs to be kept clean just like you, Isabella," says mommy.

Isabella runs to get the shampoo and brush they bought today. Bathing Lucy is so much fun. Lucy splashes in the tub and Isabella helps mommy bathe her.
