Overview

On 27 January 2011, 99% of Southern Sudan just voted for independence. But what are the philosophical reasons behind the split? If you have been curious about the situation in Sudan as the North and South have battled for decades, and wondered about the roots of the problem, this short book has a few answers. Islam and Sudan, by Dan Jahn, gives you a brief history of the country, an overview of Islam, and explains the Islamic concept of "dhimmi", one of the foundational belief problems that brought this huge country to civil war, and illustrates the failure of Sunni Islam to create a viable nation-state.

About the Author

Dan Jahn was born in Sri Lanka to Peace Corps parents, raised in Europe, and continues to travel extensively and explore other cultures, from my home base in Denver, CO.

He received a bachelor's degree cum laude from the University of Colorado, Boulder, a certificate of advanced study from Oxford University and a master's degree from the University of Wales - the world's oldest International Politics Department, where his studies focused on the interactions between world religions, politics and economics, and began his career in Washington, D.C. as a speechwriting intern at the White House, working in the Office of Communications, where he was involved in the development of the first website for the White House.

Dan founded and serves as principal of several companies, including Denver's highest-end rental photo studio: photospace, The Raven Group: a multi-disciplinary consulting company in brand development, and nxt|MODEL: COlorado's elite boutique agency. He also founded 0101, one of the world's first galleries devoted to digital art. Among his high profile clients through the years are Jones Interactive, Inc., IBM, Apple, Lockheed Martin, ReMax, Fisher Price, StorageTek, USAero and many others. Dan has been engaged as a speaker and writer on digital art, global issues, politics and religion, and has been an adjunct faculty member at Denver University (DU), the Art Institute of Colorado and guest lecturer at several universities including Arapahoe College, CU-Boulder and Metro State.

So far, Dan has been a designer, writer, teacher, website, political consultant, think tank member, and technology consultant. Most recently he began pursuing his interest in photography, and has been lucky enough to see his photos win multiple awards, appear in local, regional and national publications, and as artwork purchased both by individuals and businesses. He continues to work as a writer and photographer, along with being the owner and principal guide of Sacred Travels, an educational tour company offering global excursions.
