Overview

Quentin Dettweiler or 'Q' as he's more commonly known, is a man of intense curiosity, passion, and taste. A man who finds himself living a life that is in direct antithesis of what he seeks. After migrating from his hometown in the Midwest, Q lives in Alma Perdida, a coastal inlet in sunny Southern California. He lives a sordid, robotic life - the life sold to many as the pathway to the American Dream. A 26-year old healthcare consultant by day, and uninspired by night, he passes day after day in tedium yearning for adventure he figures long lost, his only solace to put his thoughts and pains to paper. Directionless and achingly comfortable in a complacency beckoning him to dive in, Q is on the edge when he first encounters a man unlike any other: Jersig. 

Jersig is in his mid-thirties, the kind of man with airs about him, a man who seems to hold the key to the secrets of life. A wealthy, "self-made" native Californian son who prides himself on being able to spot innate talent hidden below the surface, Jersig quickly see's something in Q that piques his interest, and subsequently befriends him. As a friendship is forged, Q slowly starts to learn to actualize what he internally believed always to be true, but never dare voiced aloud: he possesses greatness inside him. More importantly, he can learn to draw it out, and use it to impact others. Perhaps Jersig does hold the key to the secrets of life...

Or perhaps in all his mystery, he just holds secrets...potentially dangerous ones.

About the Author

J.B. Whitehouse is a 31 year old debut author from Cincinnati, Ohio and has been sober from alcohol, drugs, and all mind-altering substances since November 25, 2011. In sobriety he has built two small businesses, and helped develop one medium sized business. At the age of 29, he assisted in successfully developing dual-diagnosis treatment facility with all levels of inpatient and outpatient care, for the treatment of substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders in his hometown of Cincinnati. He is an active speaker in the field of recovery, and leads a team who dedicate themselves in helping others attempt to reclaim and reshape their own lives. More importantly, through his recovery he has developed an intrinsic sense of peace, happiness, insight, fulfillment, and wonder he never thought again possible. In that growth he has also come to fully understand that he is capable of more, and he is able to provide something to others that he have previously kept hidden from everyone - his perspective, his words, his stories. In Whitehouse’s debut novel, a man named Quentin “Q.” Yonally Dettweiler meets a mysterious and charismatic man who turns his life upside down—and helps him to discover his true calling.

The story’s protagonist is 26 years old and working as a health care consultant for a firm located near a California beach. Although nothing seems obviously amiss in his life, he feels unsatisfied. “I was wrapped in the carousel of a monotonous existence,” he reflects early on, “a life being lived incomplete.” However, an impromptu meeting at a coffee shop with a striking, wealthy man named James Jersig irrevocably changes the course of Q.’s life. Jersig impulsively invites him aboard his yacht for a lavish party, where he winds up hiring Q. as both an assistant and as his own personal scribe: “I’d like you to write for me each week. A piece that draws on the emotions, situations, and events from the week prior.” Working for Jersig provides Q. with a glimpse into a life of luxury, which also involves tense business dealings and potentially illegal associations. However, the major draw for Q. is the fact that Jersig seems to see him for who he is—and that he recognizes the man that he hopes to become: “What you search for is authenticity,” Jersig observes; for far too long, Q. realizes, he’s lived the life he thought he should rather than the one he wanted. Overall, this is a relatively brief book, but Whitehouse maintains a clipped pace throughout the narrative that keeps it moving forward. The story is part mystery, part philosophical musing, and it explores what it means to get a second chance at life and to seize opportunity when it comes one’s way. Much of this message is conveyed through conversations between the characters—particularly between Q., Jersig, and Jersig’s partner, Cadence. Although the text sometimes feels heavily freighted with gravitas—as when Q. writes down the question, “Is there a place in the world for a man such as me?”—it also helps propel the story and clarify plot points that might have otherwise been murky.
