Another summer reading gem for kids from 9 to those who are kids at heart! Filled with fantasy, wildly imaginative writing and catering to middle grade readers on up, Kristy Brown’s Kiera’s Quest: Awakenings is the kind of delightful read that turns sometime readers into avid readers! Zakk, the Prince of Zantra has lost both of his parents to the evil ways of the Witch Queen and now she has cursed his soul and trapped him inside the “body” of an action figure doll. Is she finished with him? Not quite, she then sends him through time and space, only to end up within shouting distance of young Kiera. Kiera is a bright young girl whose imagination can run wild, especially in her dreams, but a doll calling to her for help? Is she losing her mind or is she about to find out why she has always felt different? Time is running out for the prince and Kiera may be his last hope at being freed from this curse. But how can Kiera triumph over evil? Who can she count on to believe in her, and in Zakk? Kristy Brown takes her readers on a fantasy journey filled with sights, sounds and danger as Kiera struggles to save Zakk. She writes with such a carefree style that moves along at a great clip, never sparing the details to fuel one’s imagination. The daring of youth, the ability to turn fantasy into reality, to form friendships and leap into the unknown are all captured by Kristy Brown in living color as she connects with her readers with a passion for her work that is simply magnetic. From the dialogue to the background settings of this world, Ms. Brown has spared nothing in bringing this tale to life. Will Kiera's Quest: Awakening stand up to the scrutiny of younger readers? I have to say YES! Will it be a joy to read as a family, sharing everyone's input? YES, again!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review. This is the first book in a YA series for children aged 9 to 16. I really enjoyed it! Kiera Matthews is a wonderful character. She is a typical young teen with hopes and dreams. I liked her very much. She is kind, caring and sensible. However, her life is about to get very complicated, when she "meets" Zakk. Zakk is the Prince of Zantar. He is an interesting character. I liked him very much. He is a thoughtful young boy, trapped under a spell by the Witch Queen, and needs Kiera's help to break the spell before his sixteenth birthday.  I started to read this book, and I was struck by the uniqueness of it. I was quickly pulled into the story, which was a roller coaster ride from beginning to end. I am not sure the reader is supposed to like the Witch Queen, but I was quite taken with her evilness and her snide remarks; She made the book quite interesting. The Witch Queen is what I would call deliciously evil, and is one of those characters you love to hate. Kiera's friends are all interesting. They are Maddy, Joe and Daz. Their characters are not as well developed as I would have liked, but I liked them all. There are several twists and turns to keep the reader enthralled, with plenty of danger, mystery and adventure, not to mention a shocking betrayal that I did not see coming. I loved the scene where Kiera and Zakk first communicate. It had me grinning, as I could imagine it quite clearly. In fact, most of the scenes were well described and I could picture them with ease. The story ends on a slight cliffhanger and, although I am not in the intended age range for this series, I am looking forward to reading the next book as soon as possible. Kristy Brown has written a fast paced YA story that was entertaining and exciting. I loved her writing style, and the flow was wonderful. I highly recommend this book to middle grade children who love action, adventure and fantasy. I also recommend this book to adults who love to read younger YA fantasy novels. - Lynn Worton

I would like to thank Kristy Brown and the International Girls YA Book Club for a chance to read this ebook. Although I received the ebook for free, that in no way impacts my review of the book. Meet Kiera, a pretty, intelligent, and talented girl, brought up by her uncle, and abandoned by her parents. Life is as normal as she believes it to be, apart from the deep ache inside her, telling her she’s different. For years, Kiera had dreams where she ventures into a different reality. She’s not alone; a presence is always there, keeping her safe, yet she feels vulnerable, and hunted. Zakk, Prince of Zantar, is under the Witch Queen’s spell as she tries to take over his world. He crosses paths with Kiera, and their fates are entwined. As their journey unravels, she learns that she is not the only one affected by this prince. Who is on her side? Will she find out why she has been chosen? How can someone so young, defeat such evil? Will she find the strength to save the ones closest to her? Will this be Kiera’s only Quest? Great for MG-TEEN readers.( 9+) This is a very short book, only 85 pages, and yet it manages to pack a fair amount of story and action in such a short time. Kiera is the young heroine of the story, but she is surrounded by a solid supporting cast - her best friends, Maddy, Daz (Maddy's boyfriend), and Joe. Of course we can't forget the loyal Prince, Zakk, nor can we get through the review without at least mentioning the Witch Queen! The opening of the book was a tad confusing to me, as it felt chaotic but without letting me in on what was the norm versus what was the chaos. As the story progressed it did become more linear and easier for a younger audience to follow. Kiera is a good protagonist, and I get the feeling that she will grow and mature quite nicely as her Quests add up. She is a loyal friend, and though she made mistakes she owned up to them, learned from them, and did her best to make things right if she saw they were wrong (either by a mistake she had made, or if she just encountered something that wasn't right). I think that middle grade readers, particularly girls, will find Kiera and friends easy to relate to, which should help keep them engaged in the story. Zakk's story was explained, but only in very broad strokes, so I anticipate he will be playing a much larger role in future books. While the Witch Queen got more coverage, we never did learn what made her into the monster she is today, so again I feel she will be getting more hands on in future books. Unfortunately, I felt that the transitions were often brutally abrup, and not handled as well as they could, or should, have been. It felt as if the author would get stuck in a scene, and not knowing what to do with it, she would simply jerk the reader into another scene with little or no explanation as to why. This book reads more like a draft than a final version. However, I do feel that there is strong potential in the storyline and series, I'm not sure that I will make time to read book two, even to get answers to questions posed in book one. The writing just didn't work for me with the transitions between scenes being crafted as they are. But that is not to say that this is not a decent read for a middle grade reader, or older.

*I received this short story in turn for a review* First off if you are a lover of fantasy and short stories then BAM this is for you! It was cute and overall a fun read (: I like the style the author used in the book and also the language, it was a bit different and odd but I loved every bit of it. The beginning of the story immediately draws you in when a Prince is being attacked by an evil witch/Queen who basically wants to take over the prince’s -- Zakk’s -- kingdom. By the end of the first chapter it switched to Kiera but definitely leaves you wanting more of Zakk and wanting to know what will become of him and the wretched Queen/Witch. When it switched to Kiera (in our time, generation) we come to find out that she has found a doll ….. One that talks! Ok so when I found out that it talked I will admit I was maybe a little tiny bit freaked out. I mean who doesn’t get freaked out by TALKING dolls? Anyways it turns out that the doll is Prince Zakk himself trapped inside the dolls body and Kiera only had a very short time to help break the Prince’s cure or he’s a doll forever. This short read was pretty neat and I liked the way the story just seemed to flow onto the pages nicely. It was a unique-kinda-fantasy-read, one that left a much hated cliffhanger but wait a minute -- you do not have to wait for the next one because its already out! Alas, I’m hoping I can get my hands on the next copy? Maybe … Crossing fingers (: Thanks for reading and happy reading! I am open for book recommendations and reviews. - Alyssia

I am going to say it. Disney you need to read this little gem. I can sooooo see this book loved, nurtured and published by Disney.... even a movie. Oh , yeah! I went there!! I mean no offence to the cover designer, but the cover does not give any....any..... inclination to the story within. I see a more fairy tale cover. This is a most refreshing modern fairy tale with all the right ingredients. Cinderella, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, I love you all, you are classics, many versions have made it to the big screen. I love what Kristy has done with her little story, it is this quiet little achiever, I think it's time to stand aside and let another modern day fairy tale play out. This little gem comes complete with a Wicked Queen, her minion, a Prince, a girl ( Kiera) ,a vortex ( cause you have to have a vortex) , a pit of restless souls lost in nightmares, rings, some song ( as you need that) , hot boys....a goth boy and a dog named Terrence to name some. ( well, if I told you everything, no point reading it) The tale told is different and original. I was pulled in from the beginning. Now I don’t want to spoil it, but what Kristy did with the Prince, I loved!! Nice and fresh and fun . Kiera and Maddy aka speedy and weedy, we aren’t sure who is who , cause nobody wants to be to go blading. Daz, he’s the goth boy, and Joe, he’s crushing on Kiera , they make up the happy foursome of friends. Kiera lives with her Uncle Tom and attends school , her life was fairly normal, but then things change....... enter Zakk. I love how much fun Kristy has with her writing. This book is only 75pages long , but you feel like you have been inside her story, longer. I love the names of her characters and how they leap off the page at you. The teacher named Miss Ing......get it...missing....ha!! I missed it first time, lol!! The Wicked Queen is an absolute hoot! I had this voice in my head, she spoke to me when I was reading her dialogue. I loved her! Kristy’s take on a Wicked Queen was fresh and made me laugh with her actions. I think chapter one should possibly have been a prologue, but who cares, I loved this book. It was fresh and fun and entertaining. I could so see Selena Gomez or one of the other young chickens in Hollywood breathing life into Kiera. Get ready to step inside a fairy tale with a difference, will there be that Happy Ever After at the end of this book, or will Kiera be on a quest to fight for her HEA? I hope so as I had such fun reading this one. Well done Kristy:)

I found this book incredibly fun and fascinating. It's like a modern day fairy tale in the works. Oh I absolutely love the way Kiera and her friends talk and the slang words they speak. Too frickin cute! Makes me wish I grew up in the UK. Kiera's Quest is a short read that I finished within about an hour, give or take. But it's full of drama, bullies, evil wanna be Queens, a smidge of romance, and talking plastic dolls (lol does that peak your interest?). I did not find any fault in this read besides the fact I wish it was longer. The ending was a perfect set up to lead you into the next book; it left me with a want to know what happens next in her quest. Thank you Kristy for allowing me a chance to review your work, I look forward to reading more.

Kiera¿s Quest is a quick read as I finished it in one evening. While I don¿t usually read YA Fantasy books, I found Kiera¿s Quest to be an interesting, exciting, and imaginative adventure. Kiera is thrown into an adventure of her young life when she discovers Prince Zakk who was transformed into a plastic doll. She finds him with a ring that fits perfectly on her finger. You¿ll root for Kiera on her journey to save Zakk, Prince of Zantar. She is forced to follow her instincts while her Uncle and friends tell her otherwise. During her quest, Kiera is guided by Zakk who helps her find the way. Kiera doesn¿t let anyone get in her way to save and protect Zakk. In his current state, Zakk is powerless against the Witch Queen. Kiera feels the pressure to save Zakk but is encouraged by her friends and her dog, Terrence along the way. If you enjoy YA Fantasy genre, you¿ll like reading Kiera¿s Quest and get lost in her world. I was able to picture everything through Kiera¿s eyes and fee what she was feeling. She¿s determined to help Zakk as well as help save her friends. Kiera¿s Quest was an enjoyable read from start to finish, a nice little escape from everything else.
