KYRIE is the story of a bunch of high school kids in southern California in the aftermath of a school shooting. It's about how these kids cope with this disaster that comes at them from out of the blue, at the same time as they're coping with the usual challenges of being a teenager, like sex and drugs and parents and school and their gradually coalescing identities. The protagonist, and narrator, David, is a junior in high school who's in the midst of a religious crisis, bouncing between his overwhelming desire to sleep with his very chaste girlfriend, and his duties as an altar boy, escaping from both with his stoner friends. It builds to a violent and surprising climax involving the narrator's girlfriend and his sister that leaves him religiously and personally beached in a new life.
