About the Author

Dr. Joash Gambarage is a lecturer at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) where he has been teaching linguistics, African studies, and the Swahili language since 2021. He was born in Tanzania and educated at the University of Dar Es Salaam where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education (Hon.) and later with a Master of Arts degree in linguistics. He received his PhD in linguistics in 2019 from the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Gambarage’s most recent work focuses on a linguistic method for teaching and learning African languages, Bantu grammar/syntax, and language documentation. In his book, Learn Swahili in a Fun Way, Dr. Gambarage advocates for new methods of learning Swahili in which he offers creative methods of language learning through fun activities like singing grammar songs, doing grammar drills, playing word games, and flash cards.
