Overview

Nestled in a deep gorge along the Mohawk River, Little Falls first came into being as a village in 1811 and became Herkimer County's only city in 1895. With its close proximity to main routes of transportation via the Erie Canal system and railroad, as well as its access to waterpower from the Mohawk River, Little Falls became a manufacturing leader and Herkimer County's largest populated area. It was famous nationwide for its cheese market and innovations in dairy and cheese manufacturing equipment. It was the site of one of the worst train wrecks in the history of the New York Central Railroad, boasts the sixth-highest lift lock in the world, and is the hometown of a famous radio personality who started the televised dance show Twist-A-Rama in the 1960s.

The Herkimer County Historical Society has had a fourth book published through Arcadia Publishing for their "Images of America" series.

The latest book is on Little Falls and presents a collection of historic photographs with detailed captions researched by authors Susan Perkins and Caryl Hopson, of the historical society.

The book features seven chapters showcasing pictures of notable people, notable events, historic homes and buildings, churches, schools, business and industry, and transportation.

The city of Little Falls first came into being as a village in 1811, nestled in a gorge along the Mohawk River. The surrounding township of Little Falls was formed in 1829. After nearly a century of industrial growth, the village of Little Falls became Herkimer County's only city in 1895.

The authors collected photographs and conducted research for each picture throughout the summer with the assistance of volunteers and the Little Falls Historical Society.
The new release will first be available at the Herkimer County Historical Society's booksigning on Wednesday, Dec. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. at their 406 N. Main St., Herkimer, location. The cost of the book is $21.99, plus 8.25 percent sales tax. People can pre-order the book by stopping in at the historical society or by sending a check payable to the Herkimer County Historical Society, 400 N. Main St., Herkimer, NY 13350.
