Overview

I Europas historie varte middelalderen (eller middelalderen) fra det 5. til det 15. århundre. Det begynte med det vestlige romerske keisers fall og fusjonerte inn i renessansen og oppdagelsesalderen. Middelalderen er den midterste perioden av de tre tradisjonelle divisjonene i vestlig historie: klassisk antikk, middelalderen og den moderne perioden. I denne lange perioden på tusen år var det alle slags hendelser og prosesser som var veldig forskjellige fra hverandre, midlertidig og geografisk differensiert, og reagerte både på gjensidig påvirkning med andre sivilisasjoner og rom og på intern dynamikk. Mange av dem hadde en stor fremskrivning mot fremtiden, blant andre de som la grunnlaget for utviklingen av den påfølgende europeiske ekspansjonen, og utviklingen av sosiale agenter som utviklet et overveiende bygdebasert samfunn, men var vitne til fødselen til et begynnende byliv og et borgerskap som etter hvert vil utvikle kapitalismen.
