About the Author

Darlene Yee-Melichar, EdD, FGSA, FAGHE, is professor and coordinator of gerontology at San Francisco State University (SF State) where she also serves as director of long-term care administration.

Cristina M. Flores, PhD, RN, FGSA, is the owner and licensee of three six-bed residential care facilities for the elderly in California, a lecturer in the gerontology program at SF State, and an adjunct professor for UCSF.

Edwin P. Cabigao, PhD, RN, is the Chief Nursing Officer for the Jewish Home in San Francisco where he manages the strategic, operational, regulatory, and financial performances of the organization’s nursing services.

Purpose: The purpose, according to the authors, is to give advice on care across the entire spectrum of the needs of older adults. This includes care at home, retirement communities, long-term care and the transitions from one area to another. The book also covers the aging process, staffing, finances, federal and state regulations, and more.
Audience: Those who would benefit the most from the book are students preparing for healthcare management and administrative careers. The authors have a combination of academic and practical experience and the many contributors have proven their expertise in the field.
Features: The book is divided into three sections. The first covers the available options in long-term care. This is not limited to nursing homes but rather looks at long-term care in the private home, community-based services, and the continuum of living settings. The second section considers current issues in long-term care, including financial issues and the very practical issues of staff retention, preventing abuse, and litigation. There is also a chapter on marketing complete with methodologies. The last chapter reviews current trends in long-term care.
