Looking For Daniel
Having taught elementary school children for many years, I have been inspired by their honesty, their unique view of the world, and often their simplistic solutions to complex adult problems. I have written a series of episodes about a young child named Daniel and his adventures both in his school and within his community. In the first story, “Looking for Daniel,” the boy takes a simple walk around his neighborhood where he meets his neighbors and makes an interesting discovery. Other episodes include participation in the school's Christmas concert, meeting a unique neighbor, getting a puppy, attending a hockey game, etc.

Chapter One

On a cloudy summer day, Daniel decided to go for a walk. He lived in a quiet cul-de-sac, and he knew he would not get lost.

He lived on the corner house. He crossed the street. He watched Mr. Moriyama trimming his pine tree.

"What are you doing?" asked Daniel.

Mr. Moriyama just grunted. He did not speak English very well.

Daniel kept walking. He went by the Sullivans' house. Mrs. Sullivan was busy getting groceries out of the back of her SUV.

"Hi, Mrs. Sullivan," said Daniel.

"Oh, hi, Daniel," answered Mrs. Sullivan. "Where are you going?"

"I'm going for a walk and looking for Daniel," said Daniel.

"But you are Daniel, aren't you?"

"I'm looking for the other Daniel," said Daniel. "Have you seen him?"

"I'm afraid I don't know any other Daniel," said Mrs. Sullivan. She continued with her grocery bags, and Daniel continued with his walk.

He went by the Strongs' house. The Strong boys were all playing basketball on their driveway. Daniel watched them for quite a while.

"Could I try a shot?" asked Daniel.

"No, you're too young," replied the youngest of the Strongs, who was probably not much older than Daniel.

"Where you going?" asked the oldest Strong between shots.

"I'm going for a walk and looking for Daniel," said Daniel.

"Isn't that your name?" asked Strong number two.

"I'm looking for the other Daniel. Have you seen him?

"Haven't seen him," replied Strong number three.

The boys continued with their game, and Daniel continued with his walk.
