About the Author

John and Michael Policastro are two brothers with a dream – a dream of telling the world that we all have opportunities to make a difference. They share a story of what would happen if the simple pen faded away. They are extremely thankful to have children’s book writers Ellen Weiss and Mel Friedman to help them tell their story.

CHAPTER 1

Louie was late for work. "No time for breakfast!" he said to his wife. "Gotta go!"

He kissed his children on the tops of their clickers, and ran out the door.

Louie was just an ordinary blue ballpoint, but he had an important job. So did all the pens, pencils, crayons and chalks in Writesville. Every day, they went to The World, and presented themselves for duty. They went to houses, apartments, offices, schools, and factories. If called upon, they were ready. They could write important words, doodle important doodles, and scribble important scribbles.

So that Louie could go home and sleep, another pen that looked just like him went over the bridge and took his place every night. That was how it worked with all the Writers. Nobody in The World was the wiser.

They could write important words, doodle important doodles, and scribble important scribbles.

Sometimes, the Writers' lives were not so easy. They got chewed on. They got kicked under beds. They got stepped on, and even run over. The pens were allowed to run dry, while the crayons got broken in pieces and the pencils lost their points.

But the Writers did their work gladly, because they knew their work mattered. After all, they were the ones who wrote down when someone was born or someone died. And they wrote a lot of the beautiful poetry.
