Loving Eliza by Ruth Ann Nordin

Eliza left her life of prostitution to become something she could never be back in Omaha: a lady. Her plan is to remain single for the rest of her life, but when she arrives in South Dakota, she runs into John Evans. And he’s not about to let her remain single if he has anything to do about it.

As soon as John sees Eliza, he falls in love with her. Not only is Eliza the most beautiful young lady he’s ever seen, but she isn’t put off by the fact that he’s mute. Since his mail-order bride didn’t come, he sees no reason why he can’t marry Eliza and make a home with her.

Eliza, however, knows very well why they can’t be together. She used to be a prostitute. John is a sweet man who’s never even kissed a woman. He deserves a virgin who can give him her innocence and a future with children. Eliza can do neither one for him. But while she insists he should wait to see if his mail-order bride is coming after all, she is taken in with his sweetness and charm. And soon, she’s torn between doing what is best for him and what her selfish heart wants.

Loving Eliza by Ruth Ann Nordin Book 1 in the South Dakota Series Bravo to Ruth for such an excellent story. John Evans is a mute but the town, and even some of his brothers, treat him as if he is also mentally ill. He was not sent to school so he cannot read or write but he does build beautiful furniture, he was the only one of five sons who wanted to learn his father's business, and he works at helping other towns people fix up their houses and yards as needed. He is waiting for a mail-order bride to come, Daphne O'Connor, but instead Eliza steps into his life, and it will never be the same. Eliza had been attacked by an Uncle when she was fourteen and than sold to the owner of a whorehouse. The past thirteen years of her life had been spent in that place in Omaha, Nebraska. Pastor Peters had taught her about God and his forgiveness in her life and asked his cousin, Melanie, if she could work for her in South Dakota. So she just arrived on the stagecoach with Charity and her Aunt Bethany, Charity was to marry the town Marshal. After leaving those ladies she heads for Melanie's house but it stopped by an odd man who won't talk but keeps pointing to the church. She explains she is not his bride to be. When she finds Melanie has died, the man, John Evans, offers her a job and a small house to live in. She accepts. The reader cannot help but fall in love with the silent man. With his actions and body language he is so endearing. Daily he points at his or Eliza's finger as to say, "will you marry me?" and everyday she refuses. Not for the reason John thinks. Eliza knows that Daphne may come and she will be sweet and pure, the type of woman John deserves. Not one with her past. Daphne does arrive and Eliza moves to town. It is one adventure after the other. Eliza works for a nasty old woman and almost starves to death. She is busy avoiding the fellows wanting to court her and she avoids John. It is a book on forgiving yourself and others. Not assuming that if someone has a disability it takes away from who they are or how smart they are. Just an all round good read and I can't wait to read the next two books in this series. **Sexual situations within marriage are very mild.

I could not put this down! I have loved books that were free on the nook before, but this is the first I have ever felt the need to wright a review, and I have owned my nook since december. I read this book in one evening, it makes you smile, laugh, and cry. I was so taken away with the characters in the story that my emotions went right along with it. Props to the author for creating an enjoyable story of life and love. I will be checking out more books from this author

This book is 500 pages of really good reading. I cried and smiled as I read it. Elisza and John were meant for each other, just wish she could see or hear about her son. It is a great read and free, so you can't beat that. GJRA

This book is highly predictable and I know quite a few books that were written this way, but still faired well. This one however is so predictable that it quickly becomes boring. It seems like the author forgot her own time setting that its suppose to be set in. It starts off in the late 1800's, but I can assure you that if it had not been noted, I would not have even been able to tell. Yeah sure, it is cute I guess, but it doesn't even sound like a realistic situation so its sort of hard to picture it with your mind's eye. And was it just me or did anyone else find the language in this book extremely simplistic? Not a very good read (personally) and i'm so glad it was free or I would have been highly upset. -Muncy

I absolutely loved this book and the 2 following it. I wasnt sure if I would warm up to Eliza after she played a role in another Ruth Ann Nordin book where she helped get a man in trouble but once again knowing more about the character changed my opinion completely. I loved all the South Dakota books and hope more will be written about this great family!!

I loved how persistent he was. It was unspeakably amazing how they cared for each other through everything. The didn't let anyone or anything keep them from the way they truly felt. It was so sweet and romantic how caring he was. Men like John are rare and Eliza was perfect for him. The ending was also great because it doesn't leave you feeling lost

This was a beautiful story. A little slow in the begining, but keep reading it, the plot thickens. This was not the typical love story book. It has more depth. Yes, as usual, the reader knows how it is going to end, but getting there is a lot pleasure. This book is a fast read. There is some married sex. I think anyone over fifteen would enjoy reading this book.

Great story that does have sex scenes that aren't erotic! That seems to be getting harder to find in alot of historical romances. I couldn't put this book down and highly recommend it. The hero in this story is someone that I think all of us women would admire and the heroin is strong and I felt very sympathetic to. I look forward to reading the next in the series. Great for any romance lover!

Loved the characters. Nice easy read. To my fellow reviewers---PLEASE review it don't reveal it! Found out too many key plot items from reading the reviews - Almost didn't have to read it at all. I'm glad that I did though.

What that saying? Never judge a book by its cover. I can't quite figure out what label to put on this book. It is a good thing romance readers are usually open-minded. This story has an inspirational feel too it but it doesn't leave out what happens in the bedroom between husband and wife. On the author's website she describes it as R-rated and I would agree. It is nice to see an author brave enough to write spiritual side of a character and still acknowledge physical intimacy and the emotions that are entwined. John and Eliza seem to facing a few more challenges than most typical romances novels. I find I can't simply sum up this book in one tidy package- just like John and Eliza. I simply recommend it to anyone who likes romances, whether you like westerns, spiritual or historical romances. It is a love story not to be missed.
