Goldenpaw trotted over to the commotion, his ears pricked with curiousity. As soon as they stepped in the den, heat washed over him and the smell of milk lingered in the air. The sound of meweing kits reached his ears. Goldenpaw smiled as soon as Lilyfire came into veiw. Beside her were two tiny kits. He was gazing at them when a wail broke through the air.
Goldenpaw startled, bumping against a cat. A golden shecat and a flame colored tom huddled together. Goldenpaw guessed the golden shecat was Lilyfire. Tears ran down Lilyfire's muzzle, and her chest heaved in sobs. She flicked her tail ever so slightly and Goldenpaw was able to see the cause. He wished he hadn't looked.
A golden striped tabby shecat was curled up, cold and still. Goldenpaw gasped, and Rabbitpaw crouched as grief washed over her. "We're sorry." Rabbitpaw whispered. Lilyfire gave a barely imperceptible nod, as her mate groomed her tear stained fur. Rabbitpaw motioned for Goldenpaw to follow her out of the den.
It was getting dark. The sunset's glow shone on their pelts, but Goldenpaw and Rabbitpaw didn't want to marvel at this. Not now anyway. Rabbitpaw sighed, staring into the distance. "Poor Lilyfire and Firetail. This was their first litter. Their kit has gone to join StarClan." Goldenpaw's ear's flicked away a bug. "StarClan?" He mewed.
Rabbitpaw faced Goldenpaw. "They are our ancestors that live in the stars, watching us." She said quietly. Goldenpaw glanced at the sky. Stars were beginning to appear. The moon shone, casting a soft glow on things, the sky a dark blue. Goldenpaw curled into ball. His stomach growled. Rbbitpaw's whiskers twitched, and her mouth showed the beginning of a smile.
"Hungry?" She asked. Goldenpaw nodded, and Rabbitpaw led him over to a pile of prey. "The fresh kill pile." She announced, picking out a mouse. "Ever tasted mouse before?" "No." Admitted Goldenpaw as the smell of the mouse reached him, making him grow hungrier by the second. Rabbitpaw purred. "You're in for a treat. You haven't lived unless you taste one. Save me some!"
Goldenpaw nodded and bent to take a bite. As soon as he did, his eyes closed and the flavor tasted of the forest. He swallowed, grinning. "Awesome!" He agreed. Rabbitpaw smiled and took a bite. Once the mouse was finished, Rabbitpaw glanced at the sky. "Drat. I was going to show you the elder's den, but there isn't time. You get up early for training you know. C'mon, I'll show you where you sleep."
She padded toward a stone den, Goldenpaw following. Rabbitpaw showed him a nest. "This is yours." She plopped into a nest beside his, yawning." She soon curled into a ball and fell asleep. Goldenpaw stayed awake, the other apprentices steady breathing meaning that they had fallen asleep too. He was too excited to sleep, but as the night wore on, Goldenpaw soon fell into a happy sleep.
(Thanks so much for reading! Charcter apps will be put into the story, thanks for making them!
