Magical Tales of the Shee, Book 1 (Stories from Ireland, #1)

On the edge of the Fairy Ring Fort, I notice an old rowan tree. Something shiny in the branches catches my eye. At first, I think it might be a trick of the sunlight. But then, the object starts to spin and sparkle as it moves in the wind. Could it be a toy left by a magpie, I wonder, or is there something else going on?"

The Book of Tally is Book 1 of 7 in the series "Magical Tales of the Shee."

This story is told by Tally herself, a mischievous and adventurous ten-year-old girl living in the small village of Cloone, County Clare in the west of Ireland. Her family is poor, so she doesn't go to school. Instead, she spends her days exploring the spooky convent where her mother works as a washerwoman.

The story is meant to appeal to 21st Century children. However, it is set in a time before electronics when children spent a lot of time engaged in make-belief play outdoors and had adventures without excessive adult involvement.  Elements of Irish Mythology, folklore and Fairy Culture are woven into each story in the series.

The story begins when Tally stumbles upon a hidden door that leads to a secret Fairy Library inside the convent. Enlisting the help of her skeptical brother Dara and her best friend Neve, Tally sets out to explore the library, while the nuns are away on a field-trip.

Tally's discovery of the hidden library triggers an ancient Fairy prophecy that speaks of a human child destined to save Fairy Ring Forts and the Shee - fairies of Ireland, from destruction. To her astonishment, Tally is named as the child chosen to fulfill the prophecy. With secrets to uncover and dangers ahead, Tally must find the courage to step into a world she never imagined - one where magic, mythology and destiny collide.

Tally's quest begins when she learns that a Shee Ring Fort located on the convent grounds is set to be dug up to make way for the construction of a new school. Not only that, but Shee Ring Forts all over Ireland are also under threat. With the help of Lorcan, Chief of the Cloone Ring Fort, Tally must find seven magical artifacts to create a protective forcefield around Shee Ring Forts.

Throughout her quest, Tally, Dara, and Neve work together to retrieve the artifacts, overcoming obstacles and dangers, including encounters with a trickster fairy, and the evil Shee - Nuada. As Tally succeeds in finding each artifact, the magic grows stronger, but time is running out.

Magical Tales of the Shee Series will appeal to young readers ages 7-11 who are fans of the Fairy/Magic/Quests genre and are ready for slightly darker and more complex themes. Many contemporary fairy stories geared towards younger readers have simple storylines. With the inclusion of some risk, (very mild) evil villains(not that scary), mystery, suspense and a happy ending, "Magical Tales of the Shee" will appeal to young readers who are ready to level up but do not yet have the decoding and comprehension skills, nor stamina to tackle more complex stories.
