Overview

An unskilled worker in a drab northern Italian industrial city of the 1950s and 1960s, Marcovaldo has a practiced eye for spotting natural beauty and an unquenchable longing to come a little closer to the unspoiled world of his imagining. Much to the puzzlement of his wife, his children, his boss, and his neighbors, he chases his dreams, gives rein to his fantasies, tries-with more ingenuousness than skill-to lessen his burden and that of those around him. Italo Calvino (Santiago de las Vegas, l'Havana, 1923 - Siena,1985) és un clàssic contemporani italià fonamental. La seva àmplia obra narrativa comença al fi nal dels anys quaranta amb novel·les que participen del corrent neorealista. El 1958 publica amb el títol d'I racconti un conjunt de relats que posteriorment, el 1970, amplia i rebateja com Els amors difícils. Més tard, evoluciona cap a una literatura de filiació fantàstica impregnada d'un peculiar humor per mitjà de la trilogia Els nostres avantpassats, que conformen El vescomte migpartit (1952), El baró rampant (1957), El cavaller inexistent (1959) i Les cosmicòmiques (1965). Entre la seva diversa producció posterior, sobresurten Les ciutats invisibles (1972) i Si una nit d'hivern un viatger (1979). Edicions 62 ha publicat la versió catalana de gran part de l'obra de l'autor.
