It is so easy to think of the Civil War and just think of hero's like Grant, Lee, Davis and Lincoln. We forget that in many ways the war begun in Kansas. Here you get to read about one person who lived the war in the not so glamorous and glory field of the West. Such an interesting read!!! I was very happy to hear that Kansas was the first to allow African-American troops to fight in the Civil War. Read this and then visit Fort Scott, Baxter Springs, Fort Smith and Pea Ridge.
