Set in the near future, Fendley's (Solar Lullaby) book seeks to see what would happen if a treatment were to be found that reverses aging. The Methuselah Pioneers, a group of 12, have spent the past 15 years developing a longevity serum to cure terminal diseases. They are the first participants in a medical trial, and much to everyone's surprise, it has a 100 percent success rate. However, there is a considerable side effect that will challenge the beliefs and identities of many. When the rest of the world hears about what has happened, will the group be able to survive the scrutiny? Following the characters for a year from the beginning of the treatment to the first anniversary, Fendley focuses the plot on her characters and their actions. While the broader scenario of what would happen societally is touched upon, it is the small, intimate, intertwining groups of the Pioneers, their families, and their friends that serve to highlight the overall what-if question. VERDICT This book will challenge and entertain readers who enjoy a hearty dose of philosophical-based sf.—Laura Hiatt, Fort Collins, CO
