My Island Beach; I. A Summer Read
My Island Beach: I. A Summer Read is a novel about Katy Brace, a young woman returning to Island Beach the summer before her first year of college and passing, reluctantly, into the realms of adulthood. Her sabbatical serves the duel purpose of reuniting her with her grandfather Philip and earning money for college as a waitress. As the story unfolds, Katy becomes aware that not only was her grandfather intimately and covertly involved in the historical acquisition of Island Beach for the state, but that the disappearance of her grandmother and namesake, Kathleen, is somehow linked to that ill-fated bargain.

Along the way Katy makes a number of important alliances. Samantha is another summer waitress with whom Katy forms a surprisingly rapid and deep friendship. Katy is intrigued by Sam’s free-spirited approach to life, while Sam has unspoken admiration for Katy’s quiet bravado.

Evelyn runs the restaurant where Sam and Katy are indentured for the summer. Evelyn is a formidable woman, with a wicked sense of humor and justice. Evelyn is constantly, and unintentionally, pushing Katy into the spotlight that she disdains and has managed to avoid for most of her short life.

Daniel is Katy’s love interest—she is inexplicably and irresistibly drawn to him. She is also disturbed by Daniel’s serious nature and the many complications he brings to her previously simple life.

Eventually Katy realizes that it wasn’t by chance that Island Beach avoided development into 1) a major seaport, the likes of Manhattan or Boston, or 2) into a resort, or 3) finally into a naval base, to become the pristine state park that is was destined to be!

The central story of My Island Beach is a fictional and mystical explanation for the acquisition of this property by the state. Katy discovers the particulars of the events that happened so long ago and helps her grandfather deal with the consequences of both his and his dead wife’s actions.
