About the Author

Jessica Freedman has always had a love for animals and the practice of yoga. After graduating from the University of Tampa, she went to work in the zoological education department at Busch Gardens, Tampa Bay. It was here where she was able to share her passion of animals with children. During her time at the zoo, she also became a yoga instructor and found a deep love for this strong and quiet practice. She taught a variety of yoga but was strongly drawn to prenatal, Mommy and Me, and toddler classes. Having children embrace their yoga practice and make it such a positive aspect of their early childhood development is a goal she wants to make accessible to children all over the world. After having a family of her own, the inspiration for My Little Yoga was born. She is a devoted wife and mom to her own family of monkeys.

CHAPTER 1

Deep in the wild green jungle there lived a little monkey named Mason. Mason monkey was 3 years old, and like many 3 year olds, he was full of energy. He loved to run, tumble and swing the whole day long.

One day, Mason monkey's mama took him to a yoga class where he met a yoga teacher named Miss Annie. "Good afternoon, Mason monkey." Miss Annie said. He was very shy and held on tight to his mommy and quietly replied, "Hello."

Mason monkey could see a few other animals in the class. They were on brightly colored yoga mats. They were bending and moving around in all sorts of ways.

Mason monkey had never done yoga before but Miss Annie was a good teacher and soon he was doing a series of poses called Sun Salutations.

They practiced balancing poses called Tree Pose and Star Pose.

The class practiced tumbling to grow stronger and learn how to fall safely.

First, they learned how to tuck their chin and roll in a somersault. Next, they learned how to do a cartwheel with Miss Annie's help.

Then Mason monkey learned that it was important to take mindful breaths during yoga class. Miss Annie explained this was how you join the body and the mind.

She had her students play a game with a feather to teach them how to breathe deeply in and out. They lined up at one end of the room with the feathers on the ground below them. "Now get down on all fours and count how many breaths it takes to blow your feather across the room."

The children took deep breaths in through their noses and blew their breath out through their mouth. They watched the feathers glide across the floor. When they reached the other side, they all giggled in excitement, "May we try again Miss Annie?"

"Next time children." Miss Annie replied. "Now it's time to practice relaxing poses."

She taught them seated twists, legs up the wall, and little Mason monkey's favorite, happy baby.
