About the Author

I am the mother of two wonderful children, Christopher and Chloe. I was born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota, and I have a supportive husband, children, parents and sisters who truly support me in all my endeavors. I am enlisted in the United States Navy and have been serving as a Master-At-Arms on active duty since Octaober 2002. Both my jobs, as a mommy and sailor, are very rewarding, yet they can be difficult to balance at times. They require a lot of help, effort, and dedication to make them work together in harmony. During my years of service, I have been on multiple deployments that have been difficult on my family. Without my family’s support of my service, I never would have made it as long as I have. I wrote this book as a way to show a deployment through a child’s eyes and how I made them all special to my children. I wanted to finally have a book available to all my sisters in the service. No matter your branch of service, your personal situation, or who your family is, I hope you and your families enjoy My Mommy Wears Combat Boots.

CHAPTER 1

My mommy has a job that is not like any of the jobs my friend's mommy's have.

She is not a firefighter

She is not a doctor

She is not a teacher

She is not a banker

My mommy is in the military. That means that sometimes she has to leave and go far away for work.

She could go to the desert and see camels,

Or she could go out on a big ship in the ocean and see whales.

Even though I am sad when my mommy leaves, I know that she has to go. That is why I draw her lots of pictures and my family helps me mail them to her.

I like when I get a special surprise and I get to talk to my mommy on the computer. She always likes to see how much bigger I have grown.

Sometimes I will get a box in the mail from mommy. It always has neat treasures inside, like a jewelry box, a wooden statue, or money from the countries she has been to.

Before my mommy leaves, we make countdown chains to a special day or holiday in every month. It helps the time that she is gone go faster. My favorite chain is the Thanksgiving because we made the turkey tail from our handprints.

When it gets close to my mommy coming back home we make lots of signs for her and decorate the entire house.

We go and buy everything from the grocery store to make mommy's favorite food for her special Welcome Home dinner.

The day that mommy comes home we go and wait with a lot of other families waiting for their mommy and daddy.

We hold our signs up high so that mommy can find us in the crowd.
