Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool

“Just the sort of book that saves lives by igniting a passion for reading.” —James Patterson

“Reminiscent of Huckleberry Finn.” —The Wall Street Journal

A Michael L. Printz Honor Winner

From the author of Newbery Medal winner Moon Over Manifest comes the odyssey-like adventure of two boys’ incredible quest on the Appalachian Trail.

When Jack Baker’s father sends him from his home in Kansas to attend a boys’ boarding school in Maine, Jack doesn’t know what to expect. Certainly not Early Auden, the strangest of boys. Early keeps to himself, reads the number pi as a story, and refuses to accept truths others take for granted. Jack, feeling lonely and out of place, connects with Early, and the two become friends.

During a break from school, the boys set out for the Appalachian Trail on a quest for a great black bear. As Jack and Early travel deeper into the mountains, they meet peculiar and dangerous characters, and they make some shocking discoveries. But their adventure is only just beginning. Will Jack’s and Early’s friendship last the journey? Can the boys make it home alive?

Reminiscent of adult novels by Yann Martel and Alice Hoffman (Life of Pi, The Red Garden), Newberry Medal-winning author Clare Vanderpool employs the mythic metaphors of Boat and Bear with a grace all her own. in this new coming-of-age tale for middle school readers set just after WWII. When 13-year-old Jack Baker’s distant Naval Officer father dumps him at Morton Hill Academy for Boys following his mother’s death, Jack’s only real solace must be found in his decidedly-odd fellow eighth grader, Early Auden. Thoroughly disoriented by his move from the plains of Kansas to the coast of Maine, Jack accepts Early’s offer of friendship. Surprises abound as the boys explore the mysteries of competitive Crew, Billie Holiday, frontier mathematics and what really lurks in the forest. This is a satisfying read with profound meaning that never comes on too strong; highly recommended for Grades 5 through 10, especially for students dealing with parent loss.

If you enjoy middle grade novels (10+ ages) you will love this gem. Historical, adventure, and heart--it has it all. If you liked Ms. Vanderpool's first novel or books like HOLES (with a story within a story) this will be a perfect fit for you or your young reader.

I chosen this book because it looked interesting. I think it would be about 2 boys. No it was about  girl life story. Clare decided she wanted to be a writer in fifth grade and at age 45 her first book was published. (Fiction)  I like this book because it tells you that your dreams can come true and to never give up on  your dreams. Because someday your dream is gonna be true. This book is  very inspiration. I think kids to 10+  year old can read this book. It's about a girl and she had a dream about being a writer then she gruaduated and then she became a writer and published her first book at age 45
