Fun is the word that comes to my lips the most when I tell others about Ann Charles' Nearly Departed In Deadwood. Violet, Doc and the others are real people living their lives the best they can, and those lives are being lived with the background of a truly historical city of the Old West. I actually found this book during a search for a Western to broaden my reading list, and I wound up with a story taking place now. This book has mystery, romance, horror, and all kinds of great characters, especially the pretty, smart, tough Violet, who will take you on a fun adventure in Deadwood!

I was looking to try out something new and this was recommended to me. It was only $1 so why not? I figured at best it would be okay but I was wrong. I really liked it, Violet Parker has quickly become one of my favorite protagonists, and Doc is one of the most intriguing characters I've read since Alaska Young. I was so excited to find out this was the start of a series because I'm not quite done following Violet around yet.

The book not only held my attention but had me second and third guessing who the killer was - Who was Doc and what was his special job? Why was Hessler selling his home now? What happened to the swim team? What was this single mother of two going to do if she doesn't sell a house??? Who was her secret admirer? All legit questions that are answered well and with a special twist at the end. Great character development and mystery.

I read the first sentence and laughed out loud. To my delight, that was a preview of things to come. Ann Charles has a penchant for mixed metaphors that will leave you thinking "Oh - she did not just say that...!" There's a great cast of characters here including the always out-spoken Old Man Harvey, the sultry and mysterious Doc Nyce - who can leave Violet running both hot and cold in a single afternoon - and Natalie, the sex-bomb best friend who has sworn off men (again)...or will she become the competition? The protagonist, Violet Parker is no "Shrinking Violet". She is feisty and forthright, but her curiosity may get the best of her, as she cannot resist trying to solve a good mystery. When you reach the end of book one, you will be begging Ann Charles to hurry up on the next installment!

Love Harvey. It is mystery with romantic and paranormal subplots. I never thought I would like paranormal books, but this was a good introduction to the paranormal. Read and enjoy.

A very enjoyable book. I foind the romance scenes more than a little creepy so i tried to scan past those as fast as possible without losing any vital information. Excluding those macabre portions of the book, it was worth the money and i look forwaed to find out what happens next in the series.

A fun series that does an excellent job of giving one an accurate tour of Deadwood and Lead. Having been a life-long visitor to the area, it is highly entertaining to know the places sited in the books.

What a fun book. I LOVED the relationship between Violet and her hero. It keeps you guessing for most of the story. Will they, won't they? :) Ms. Charles is very good at diverse (and quirky) characterization and I found a lot to like about this story. The series ought to be a blast to follow.

I knew from the first paragraph or rather section of dialog that I was going to love this story. There's just something about well-written witty banter that I love. This should be made into a movie. I'd watch it in a Deadwood minute. Be still my heart. It's a series!Optical Delusions in Deadwood (Deadwood Mystery Series)

I did finish this book, but was angry many times. Violet Parker was trying to earn a living to support her two children and those children did everything they could to tank Violet's career. The kids are whiny and self-centered, not caring one whit about how hard their mother is working. Mom set no boundaries and she is walked all over by the people who really should have her back. Her daughter tries to set Mom up so many times, the daughter might as well be a primp. And prostitution appears to be Violet's only career option. Her co-worker is classic example of creating a hostile work environment and the boss does nothing. Descriptions of Deadwood are fun. I wanted to read and like this book as I lived in the Black Hills for several years and have a very soft spot for the Hills. Unfortunately, that spot has turned hard to Ann Charles. Don't waste your time.

As I'm familiar with the book's setting, I really enjoyed reading about old stomping grounds. I whipped through this book in two days, and got a kick out of it. Naturally I went to buy book two in the series, but it isn't available on NOOK? What? Then book 3 is available, 4 is not, and 5 is. This makes no sense. I am reading every other book on my Nook, and the other two on my phone with a different reading app. But why?
