Never Say Spy by Diane Henders

…If a kickass middle-aged bookkeeper got sucked into a spy’s life…

Despite her penchant for weapons and ripe language, Aydan Kelly’s resumé reads ‘bookkeeper’, not ‘badass’. She’s leaving the city to fulfill her dream of rural tranquillity when she gets carjacked by a man who shouldn’t exist.

When RCMP officer John Kane kills her would-be abductor, Aydan thinks her troubles are over. But Kane’s investigation implicates her in an international espionage plot, and criminal charges become the least of her worries when she’s targeted by the very spies Kane suspects her of aiding.

Pity her enemies. Because nobody’s tougher than a middle-aged woman who wants her dream back.

* * *

Contains coarse language, moderate violence, and sexuality. The story can stand alone but will be more enjoyable if read in order.

“If Janet Evanovich’s quirky humour met Robert Ludlum’s taut thrillers, the Never Say Spy series would be their love child: racy, fun, and action-packed!”

About the Author

By profession, I’m a technical writer, computer geek, and ex-interior designer. I’m good at two out of three of these things. I had the sense to quit the one I sucked at. That’s how I currently support myself. To deal with my mid-life crisis, I’m also writing adventure novels featuring a middle-aged female protagonist. And I’m learning to kickbox. This seemed more productive than indulging in more typical mid-life crisis activities like getting a divorce, buying a Harley Crossbones, and cruising across the country picking up men in sleazy bars. Especially since it’s winter most of the months of the year here. It’s much more comfortable to sit at my computer. And hell, Harleys are expensive. Come to think of it, so are beer and gasoline. Oh, and I still love my husband. There’s that. I’ll stick with the writing.

I am not normally interested in spy novels or first person reads but this book easily sucked me in. LOVE the main character's fortitude and humourous self talk. She cracked me with the running dialogue in her thoughts and liked that the author portrayed a self sufficient female who relied on herself and her strengths AND exhibits a self pride in doing such. What a pleasure to read an intelligent character who challenged her weaknesses and empowered herself. I couldnt put the book down....I was immediately on to the next book in the series. OH what a joy to also have a mature woman my age cast in such an action packed thriller & as many can vouch, women nearing their 50's are far from tired hags! Haha Hope this encourages other ladies to read & enjoy as I have!

Fun and Awesome Spy Adventure for Women or Men! The Jan 24th review says it all. The humor is in these really strong characters and how they, especially Ayden, face the world. I was so hoping that this was the beginning of a series and it looks like it is. To whoever recommended Never Say Spy, thanks. I am now a Diane Henders fan!

After reading about the writer, I had a feeling I would enjoy this book.  Yep, I just had no idea how much!  There's inner dialogue, but not too self-centered.  I love the irrepressible, quirky heroine!  She stands up for herself and doesn't  take crap from anyone, even if she has to use her fists!   I couldn't put it down and ended up reading until dawn.  So much for sleep!  I will be getting the rest of the series, for sure!  (Four more with a sixth coming out Spring 2013). Highly recommended!

How good was this book? I bought the rest of the series! This is the first time i've done that. Well worth the read. Funny, suspenseful, and sexy.

Diane Henders stepped outside the usual cliches of women in the spy biz and created a likeable; realistic protagonist who is heterosexual but not slutty; self-sufficient but also a good team player, and who is mature, attractive, athletic, and even (gasp!) has a few gray hairs. It was a treat to discover that the character is in her forties. Female readers will want to be her. Male readers will just want her. Can hardly wait to read the next one. Because I, too, am a writer, I am uber-critical of fiction authors. Diane's writing style is fast-paced, with excellent plotting, great dialogue, and--oh, just buy the book and see for yourself. Happy reading!

I almost stopped reading this book because at first is seems it is going to be a perenormal (? Spelling) type book, but keep reading, it really is a spy thriller. Its a very good book and I will be reading more of this series. Read it in one day and purchased the next one. Would start it now, but it is 6 am!

I so enjoyed this book! I sat up until 3am reading and only stopped because I fell asleep. I had to keep reading about Aydan and her adventures! Such a self reliant strong woman. Love books where the woman is the hero and not a wimp. I have already bought the rest of the series and cannot wait to get started on it.

It nice to read a book with an older and extremely competent heroine. Quirky dialogue, interesting plots, smooth transitions to scenes. A book that is truly fun to read!

A bit of mystery a bit of sex, a bit of fun

I got this book when it was a freebie and can honestly say I would pay for it if I had to. This book was a great change of pace from the normal heroine books. She's a kick-butt, older female who isn't ashamed of who she is. I've read all 5 books at this point and cannot wait for the next one to come out. Diane Henders does a great job drawing the reader in and making them want to read what happens next!

I love the characters and the story development. I couldn't put this one down and now I own them all. Can't wait for the next one!

I really enjoyed this book! Some things in the book were predictable, some were not, which kept me on my toes. The heroine might have been a little too good to be true, but if I want the main girl to react by crying in the corner filled with angst, I'd go read a YA novel! I love how she was victimized but wouldn't allow herself to be "the victim" for long! I can't wait to read the next book in this series!

I was really surprised how much I enjoyed this book. It is so nice to read about a smart independent woman, who can isn't perfect and isn't 20. I liked it so much I have read the other books in the series and am on book 5 now. If you like spy  Stories you'll probably like this one too.

I found no errors at all. Impressive. Characters and character development, great. I LOVE a long book if its good. This one is. I will read more. Only issue for me was the sex. Its a personal thing. If you don't mind then you won't mind. If you do mind, you can easily skip it. There is not much of it and the book is over 700 pages. Did I remember to say you should read it?

So glad I got the first book free. It turned me onto the whole series. Starts of weird, at first, but then you realize that it is more techno/sci fi and NOT a supernatural genre. Lots of suspense and very funny, endearing characters!

I really liked this book. The main character was definitely not a damsel in distress type. She was funny and hungry, which I find to be good qualities. I will be reading more by this author, for sure.

I enjoyed the book. I feel the mix of mystery, technology and sexy was a wonderful escape for me personally. I recommend this to "those of a certain age" like 40-50 somethings. Yes I am looking forward to the new adventures of Aydan Kelly...even though I see myself as more of the Hellhound type character...hope he is still around.

A great read for those who look for romance novels. For me? This is probably my last in the series.

Nicely written with an interesting twist. Heroine is like a 45 yr old tomboy with definite feminine traits so don't be surprised by the language or the sensuality. Story does get a little sci-fi-ish, but with technology advancing as fast as it is who knows if this is coming sooner than we think. Characters are mostly believeable. There are subtle hints about Ayden that make me want to read the next one & find out more about her. I'm hooked!
