This is a broad summary of the last 20 years concerning the discovery and science of the vasoactive substance nitric oxide (NO). There are more than 40 contributors to this book, including the recent Nobel Laureate Lou Ignarro. The editors attempt to summarize the current state of knowledge of the mechanisms of NO's effect in the vasculature. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive review of the molecule NO, from its discovery as the "mysterious" endothelial derived relaxation factor to its broad based mechanisms of action. This book is oriented toward biomedical scientists. The main objective is to assist investigators and professors in a more thorough understanding of NO and its biological activity. Each chapter is designed as a state-of-the-art review of the synthesis and measurement of NO and its biochemistry and physiology. Additional information on the molecular biology of NO synthase is also provided. This book is quite simply an outstanding review on the biology of NO. Dr. Ignarro gives an excellent overview of the discovery of NO and how this discovery has assisted in our understanding of the mechanism of action of numerous cardiovascular vasodilators. The data presented in each chapter are first rate and clearly illustrated. The conclusions on mechanism of action of NO are consistent with the data. I personally will use this valuable reference in preparation of didactic materials in cardiovascular pharmacology.
