Not Even Light

In a world fractured by relentless pandemics, ecological collapse, and devastating wars, life on isolated White Cedars farm offers young Travis little more than a cycle of routines that slowly crush the spirit. For Travis, the farm feels like a black hole, a place where not even the light of dreams can escape. But being a "bright spark" with a restless mind yearning for more, he exiles himself from the farm to find adventure and enlightenment in the Big Woods, a sprawling wilderness teeming with both real and imagined threats: the brutal Last Harvest Reapers; the enigmatic alien Flies whispered about in fearful tales; and desperate souls turned bandit.

Travis's journey quickly takes a dark turn when he crosses paths with the powerful and malevolent cobot Bors who forces him on a desperate quest tied to a terrifying legacy. Travis and his two new companions, pragmatic Dunc and resourceful Dyani, must locate a mysterious Old Days cache that could hold the means of unimaginable destruction — a potent virus or a far more insidious bioweapon — and keep their discovery from falling into the wrong hands, be they ruthless gangs, fanatical Reapers, or Bors himself, who has his own terrifying agenda.

As Travis's story unfolds, it becomes one of desperate choices, moral ambiguity, uneasy alliances, and the struggle for survival and hope on a journey into a future haunted by the past, where the bonds of friendship and trust are tested against the harsh realities of his world.

Will Travis find the light he seeks in a world shrouded in darkness? Can Travis, Dyani, and Dunc outwit Bors and survive the dangers of the Big Woods? Will they uncover the secrets of the lost cache before it's too late for everyone? Or will they, like so many others, succumb to the forces that threaten to unleash a final catastrophe upon their broken world?

About the Author

As a young boy, all I had to do to enter a magical world was walk a few feet into the shadows and stillness of the woods behind my house. I spent many hours exploring their depths as well as the countryside just the other side of the creek that bordered our lot. I'd say that nature has been and still remains my best and favorite school.

I also loved attending the public schools in my hometown and a nearby university. I was inspired by the dedication of many of my teachers, and so I became one myself and taught secondary English and mathematics for thirty-three years. After retiring, I spent two years as a special education aide for an autistic student and another ten years as a private tutor. I now devote most of my time to thinking, reading, writing, loom knitting, and birding.

I first conceived of Not Even Light while considering the stories we tell ourselves about our origin, our history, our purpose, and the paths we're most likely to take into our shared future. Lately those paths have become increasingly uncertain, and I believe that Not Even Light is a reasonable depiction of where they are leading us. Nevertheless, like Travis and his friends, I have not yet given up hope.
