Not Half Bad
Even the shadows cast by the rising sun that day prophesied something remarkable. Distorted, blurred, grotesque, they took on an orange-gray hue from the hazy redness of the morning, shimmering like smoke wisps rather than shadows, writhing and reaching out instead of napping on the ground as shadows are meant to. The clouds curled in tiers, the lower, gray, fog-like layer sliding right to left, the white piles of pillows of the upper bank tumbling left to right. The clouds coasted, but not a whisper of wind touched the earth. Trees stood stolidly still, as though rooted at the top. Birds neither moved nor sang; even their ravenous hatchlings curtailed their cravings. The silence echoed. The air seemed thick, like see-through porridge.
