About the Author

About The Author
O. Henry (1862-1910) is one of the pen names of William Sydney Porter, who is often cited as perhaps the greatest short story writer in history. One of the most prestigious prizes awarded to short story writers is the PEN/O. Henry Award. Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Porter initially followed his uncle's career path and became a licensed pharmacist, but after marrying his first wife and moving to Texas, he began working as a drafter for the state government and in the banking industry, all the while dabbling in short story writing. While working at the First National Bank of Austin, Porter was accused of embezzlement and fled the country, hiding in Honduras. Upon hearing that his wife was suffering from tuberculosis and likely to die, he surrendered to US authorities, cared for his wife until her death and then began serving a five year prison sentence at the Ohio Penitentiary where he began writing his short fiction at a prodigious clip. Upon his release for good behavior, Porter moved briefly to Pittsburgh and then to New York where he wrote an astonishing 381 stories before dying of cirrhosis of the liver in 1910 after years of heavy drinking.
