Description: Presented as a series of chapters written by various experts on the subject, this book aims to highlight the current understanding of the genetics of obesity.
Purpose: The editors intended to cover all the relevant main topics in the study of the genomics of human obesity, including insights from rodent and nonvertebrate research. The discussions are timely, since it is now accepted that obesity is a major public health challenge to much of the industrialized world and that genetic makeup plays a major role.
Audience: This is not an easy read for beginning students. Nonetheless, for researchers and teachers interested in the field, it provides an informative overview of the genomics of obesity.
Features: Topics range from quantitative genetics of obesity and hunting for genetic variations associated with obesity phenotypes to discussions of gene-environment interactions, which examine genetics of factors that modulate energy balance in humans, including eating behavior and physical activity. Epigenetics, heritable variations in gene expression without differences in the primary DNA sequences, and recent technical advances in profiling the levels of transcripts, proteins, and metabolites are also discussed.
Assessment: As the editors note, the book can be viewed as a compilation of review articles from experts who are actively involved in research, expressing their views on the topics. As such, there is repetition and even discordance among chapters. Nonetheless, it provides an updated overview on the genomics of obesity.
