Description: This book in the Sleep Disorders series is one of two covering obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), specifically its pathophysiology, comorbidities, and consequences.
Purpose: It is intended as a guide and review for clinicians on the clinical features, characteristics, comorbidities, and impact of OSA.
Audience: The editor hopes that the reader will "strive to become expert in the field of sleep" and that the book will serve as a further stimulus to research in the field. This is an ideal sourcebook for clinicians wishing to become familiar with sleep medicine.
Features: The first of the book's two sections deals with features, factors, and characteristics, providing a general overview of OSA including history, epidemiology, and pathophysiology. The second section covers associations and consequences such as the impact of OSA on the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, endocrine function, obesity, mood and behavior, sleepiness, and health-related quality of life. Each of the 25 chapters is written by prominent sleep clinicians and includes a thorough bibliography.
Assessment: This is very thorough and easy to read guide to OSA with a focus on pathophysiology and comorbid medical conditions and consequences. Comprehensive in scope, its detailed chapters cover a wide variety of topics including such recent findings as oxidative stress in OSA. I recommend this book highly as a good resource for sleep clinicians as well as clinicians who are trying to learn more about the condition.
