James McGregor is well known and respected in Chinese business, political, and media circles. A Mandarin speaker, he has served as a key adviser to both the U.S. and Chinese governments. As The Wall Street Journal's China bureau chief following the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre, the chief executive of Dow Jones' China business operations during much of the roaring 1990s, and a venture-capital investor during China's dotcom boom, McGregor has negotiated every avenue of the labyrinth that is business in China. He is also a former chairman and a decade-long governor of the American Chamber of Commerce in China. He is a senior counselor for APCO Worldwide, and is member of the Council on Foreign Relations; National Committee on US-China Relations; International Council of the Asia Society; and serves on a variety of China-related advisory boards. James MacGregor's book captures alot of the unchanging realities of doing business in the world's most volitile and expanding market. Yes China is changing --but one of the bloodiest civil wars in history..the Great Proletariate Cultural revolution was unable to wipe out imbedded characteristics of Chinese businessmen and women. MacGregor's book gives one concrete examples of what to watch for and what to avoid. In this century--any company worldwide will be either working with the Chinese or be facing competitive ,survival pressures from the Chinese. In either case---being informed is the first step towards success READ This Book.

One of the better books on doing biz with China. Gives very detailed case studies of foreign operations inside China. Very interesting read, though somewhat weak on general issues.

Books are often written from the memory. However, the best books are those that are written from experience. One Billion Customers by James McGregor beautifully paints the chaotic Chinese business environment in a systematic and chronological manner. Being in China when it was undergoing vast changes in its system and sitting in the passenger's seat through the journey, the author has brought with him valuable lessons and insights in doing business with China. This book is a must read for all who plan to do ventures in China and its people.
