Chapter One
Original You
What is the original you? The original you was the day you were born, a clean slate, a fresh human being added to the world. You were born with all the minerals and data that created the universe. You are a genuine marvel, a super being capable of anything you put your mind to. You are a human being without fearfrom when everything was possible and you could be anything you wanted. That was day one in the human mind; every day thereafter changed us slowly because of what we were told, what we saw, and what we began to learn. The original you is the real you, not the person you have become but the person you were in the beginning of your life. If you are looking for more out of life, then the person you have become may not be getting the job done. The original you or the person you were, the person the universe created maybe the answer. That's how you can change your destiny, by changing who you have become.
We were all the same on the day we were born. We all had a future with many exciting possibilities. As we have grown in life, we have noticed some vast differences between us all. Some people have gone on to be very wealthy. Some people started companies and businesses. Others are poor, never having done much of anything. People have gone on to rule countries and command armies and discover new worlds. There are many people who suffer through life with very little.
Why are there such differences in people? We were all born the same, capable of everything. The day we were born was a wonderful day with a new beginning. We had a fresh startand that's as good as it gets for most people. The following days and years begin to change because of the layers of stuff that are added to our brainswhere we live, who our parents are, and what we do for a living. It goes on and on.
I have gone back to my hometown several times in the last ten years or so; some of my high school friends still live there and work modest jobs there. They dream of something better; they dream of a better place. You can't find a better life if your mind is stuck in the same old place. As the years go by, the layers get deeper and deeper. You begin to have thoughts of self-doubt and thoughts of never being able to leave. People who retain the same thoughts and the layers of life's harmful influences will never find the success, financial freedom, and personal growth they desire. The layers of thoughts we have picked up along the way are not all harmful. We learn many great things as we go through life. If we can sweep all that bad stuff away while keeping all the good about ourselves, we will start to see dramatic changes.
You need to find the original youthe person the universe created with wild dreams and endless thoughts. That is the person you were before self-doubt came into youand before you realized you would never be president. Everything is possible if you change your thoughts and start over with the original you.
The best way I can think of comparing the original you with yourself today is to visualize a grocery store shopping aisle. There are all kinds of foods in this particular aisle, a mixture of everything. Let's pretend the original you is waiting at one end of the aisle, ready to proceed down it for the first time. This is the first time the original you has gone shopping. There is no history of ever being down this shopping aisle before.
The original you starts down the aisle and begins to see all kinds of food. Everything in the shopping aisle looks good, and the original you begins to pick up items that you think you may like. Since it's the first time you are going down the shopping aisle, it's hard to tell if you will like all of the items you put in your basket. You will have to find out later. At the end of the aisle, your cart is filled with stuff to try over the next week or so. Some of the items you bought you will loveand some you won't buy again.
When you go back several weeks later, you go back to the same aisle. This time, you have a little more of an idea of what you like and what you do not like. This time, you buy some of the same things and some new things. The first time, it was wide open for you to select items, but it's not so wide open the second time. You will purchase many things based on the previous shopping trip.
As we return to the shop more frequently, we become more conservative and stick to buying the same old things based on what we know. We are less likely to buy something new. We will try new itemsbut not as many as the first or second time.
The original you is willing to try new things, experiment with ideas, and venture into new territory all the time. The original you does not know any better because it has no history to fall back on. Everyone has a history, but we need to find a way to not let this history get in the way of our future thoughts.
Every time we shop at the store, we add one more layer of thoughts for the next time we shop. Every day, we add one more layer of thoughts for the next day. When we change our thoughts and actions on the first day of the week, every day after that is changed. If you continue to do that, you have no choice but to change into the person whom your thoughts are centered on.
As the days go by, you are changing your history of thoughts and actions. This will affect your future thoughts and actions. You cannot keep buying the same old stuff at the same old store and expect different results. The original you did notand could notdo that. You cannot keep believing the things you think or believe about yourself. They are not true because the original you did not have them to start with. You picked these ideas up when you were shopping (living). Start putting back a large portion of the things you picked upand let the original you do some living for a change.
How you grew up and the things you were exposed to define how many layers there areand how harmful those layers will be. You can cut through all of them to find the original you. You can change your destiny. I have known folks who simply moved to another part of the country to be inspired by new scenery and new people. A move like that allowed them to feel like a new personuntainted by anything. In the new place, the old thoughts are left behind. New thoughts can flow through their minds. They felt like totally new people. That is one way to remove a bunch of layers, thoughts, and fears.
The new thoughts create new actions and different results that can change a person's life. The original you has no boundaries and believes anything is possible in life. What would you be doing with your life if you had a hundred million dollarsor if money was no issue? You would probably be doing something you have always dreamed of doing. Maybe you would own a business or be a doctor. Maybe one of your hobbies would become more than a hobby or your hobby could become a business. Whatever you decide, you would be yourself. The original you would be chasing your true passionswhatever they may be.
Most of us work at jobs or have careers because we need money to live, but these positions are really not our true passions. The original you only goes after your true passions because they are all it knows. The original you only knows what is deep inside you and what makes you tick. The original you knows who you really are; when this new you comes forward, it does nothing but go in the direction of your dreams.
Before I found my original self, I never thought I could be in sales. It was just not my personality; I thought sales would not be a good fit for me. I was right about thatit would have never worked because that was me before I found the original me. I was so wrong in how I thought about myself.
The original you is waiting for the chance to change your life forever. The original you has been covered up for a long time and can't wait to get to work on your new future. You are who you think you are, but who do you want to be? That is the big question. For me, there was no reason to settle for the person I was. I wanted to be more and do more, but the only way to get there was to find or discover the original me.
The stories, methods, and thought processes I used to make changes to my life, my attitude, and the way I thought are here. I needed to change the way I thought to change the way I acted. That's when I realized the truth about how and why we do the things we doand why we don't do the things we should.
Once I figured out how I needed to think and how to change my thoughts, the methods became clear. Reaching my personal and financial goals became easier; like a bolt of lightning, things started to change instantly. I was amazed by how quickly it happened. I was earning five times what I earned the year before my thoughts and methods changed. You can't discount the results because this change came from within. By changing the way I thought about everything, I could alter the future and my destiny. I could change my world.
Within months, I noticed a dramatic change in myself. In my first year, I was national rookie of the year for the sales career I had chosen. It was a stunning achievement and turnaround from the person who I had been. I was not a slacker by any means; I was a very hard worker. I had always given 110 percent at whatever I was doing, but it was not getting me where I wanted to be. There had to be something holding me back that was not holding successful people back. I needed to figure it out in a hurry. In my mind, time was running out. If I was going to get where I wanted to be personally and financially, I needed to get moving in a hurry. By discovering who I wasand why I was that wayI was able to focus on those thoughts. My life changed in an instant.
I was the top salesperson in my state and remained in the top five nationwide for the next three years. During that time, another company tried to recruit me. I resisted for a year before I agreed to make the move. That was the original me making a move in the right directiontoward a new challengewithout fear.
The new company was looking to ramp up their business. I was the number-one sales associate in the entire company in my second year. That is what happens when you let the original you take control of your life. The changes for me were so dramatic that it reinforced my thoughts about why these changes came about for me. My success continues to this day; many other life-changing methods of thought bring me to newer heights.
I feel strongly about this subject matter, and it will help you reach your personal and professional goals. My results should be nothing but positive for you as well. This book is a guide for some of the methods I used to change my life forever. Finding the original me allowed me to use these methods and thoughts. I could not have used them before. It is strange to look back, but I felt blocked back then. Once the original me took over, all the doors opened and the walls came tumbling down.
I think back from time to time about the person I left behind. My old self had to go; he had to be left behind if this new dream-chaser I had become was going to be successful.
Chapter Two
The Pink Slip
When I look back at what unfolded in my life and the events and choices I made, they lead to an amazing turn in my life. It started with a pink slip. The best thing that happens in a career is usually getting a jobnot losing one.
It was not a termination by my employer; it was a termination of myselfby myself. I made a decision that was totally out of character at that point in my life. I had just turned forty and realized time could be running out. Life is short sometimes. I needed to take actionand it needed to be quick. I had been working for the same company for twenty-four years. I held several different positions during those years. I don't want to reveal how little money I was making. It's truly embarrassing and is not a thought I wanted to hang on to. I had always wanted more money and more freedom, but the person I was did not allow me to be financially successful.
Who we are begins at childhood. I was a very shy kid, and I wanted to remain in the background, unnoticed and unannounced. I was an A student who got B's and C's on purpose. I suppose I did not want to bring attention to myself. I didn't want to be a nerd. I didn't want to be a jock. I just didn't want to be noticed. I carried these attributes into adulthoodas many people do. Why was I so shy? Why did I want to remain a nobody? I don't have the answers; frankly, I don't care. I don't have time to worry about the reasons; I have to focus on change. If you want to spend five years in therapy with a counselor, that's your business. For me, it's about changing as quickly as possible.
It's really not about why or how we became the way we are. I did not focus on the possible reasons. It's about getting what you want out of life and living the dreams you've had for most of your life. How do I get from here to there? Why do so many people get there and I don't? What makes them different? We are all built the same. Why can't I be the number-one salesperson for my company, achieve personal growth, or have my dreams come true?
I grew up in New York in the seventies. We were lower-middle class, and I did not know anything different. My father was an ambitious person and knew what he wanted out of life. It was nowhere near what he had been exposed to as a child in the inner city. He was outgoing and would talk to anyoneanywhere and anytime. He was always "dressed for success." When he graduated from high school, he went to work for a large company and factory in town. After several years, he came home and told my mother he had quit his job. He was going to go to college, and he said she should get a job to support us. What a sudden change! He earned his master's degree and was a schoolteacher for the rest of his working life. That was his dream. I think he realized he was not going to live the same way he had grown up. He decided that he needed to improve his situation and his life beyond what his parents had. He found his original being. He may not have known it at that timeor he may not even know it nowbut he did.
I learned many things from my father. You can make a sudden change in direction, and you can do whatever you want. You need to go after it and not look back. This is a new thought process for some people. You can suddenly shift in a new direction. You cannot wish that your dreams for success are someday going to come true while you are on another path. You have to begin to do things that will take you down the path that leads to your dreams.
What happens if you come to a fork in the road and do not choose either road because you don't know where they lead? One of them leads to your dreams, goals, and destiny. Sometimes you know the path you are on is easy, and you know the trail very well. It's a safe trail; you've made sure it's free and clear of disappointment, rejection, risk, and fear. You have taken great care to make sure it's a trail without risk or fear. You even paved it so it would be smooth. However, you can never reach your personal goals and financial goals because you are comfortable with that trail. You need to blaze a new trailone you never thought was possible.
Everything you want is waiting for you. It's been there all the timewaiting for you to go in that direction. The dirt trail is full of risk, fear, rejection, and disappointment, but that's where your dreams are. You have to take itthere is no other option. The original you does not know any better and will likely follow the uncharted trail to discover what it holds. That's where you and the original you are so different; the original you has no fear to overcome.
Let's get back to that pink slip. A coworker told me she was moving to Colorado and asked if I wanted to go too. I would have normally said, "No. My family is here. My friends are here. My job is here. My whole life has been here. Why would I move? I just can't pack up and move. What would I do there? I have twenty-four years with this company. That is risky for me."
When I look back at the thought process, I realize I made about fifteen excuses not to do something else. What do I have to lose? All my dreams could be down that trail. Everything I have ever wanted could be waiting for me; I don't know in what form since I don't have a plan. If I don't go, I could miss out on everything I ever wanted.
For the first time in my life, I was going to do something out of character. There was no safety net. The fork in the road had arrived. I was going to take it because it might lead to my dreams. The path I was on had not produced any major results toward anything I was dreaming of.
If I do not follow this trail, I will never know where it leads.
I put in my two-week notice the next day. Almost everyone was shocked; they had expected me to work there forever. I probably thought I would too. I needed to give myself a pink slip for not chasing my dreams. I started to change that day.
