CHAPTER 1

Paul Michael is a young and curious praying mantis. He lives in a big garden full of colors with his mother and other praying mantises. Paul Michael has learned much from his mother. He knows that his colors can protect him as long as he stays in the garden or plays on trees or plants. He knows that his legs and wings can also protect him from bugs or humans.

Every day Paul Michael's mother reminds him to avoid the "dreaded glass jar." Praying mantises lucky enough to escape the glass jar tell their stories. These stories make Paul Michael shake. He could not imagine being trapped in a jar with the lid closed tight.

But living in the same garden day after day gets boring. The world looks fun outside the garden. When you're young you think you are smarter than others. ... just like Paul Michael. One early morning Paul Michael bravely left the garden.

Wow! How fast Paul Michael could walk on the short grass. He loved the smell of the flowers that popped up all over as the sun warmed him.

Suddenly, something scared Paul Michael. He stopped and raised his legs. Before he could get his wings to flap he was swooped into the "dreaded glass jar."
