Description: The Essentials series is designed to provide a general overview of disease processes and normal findings in a defined organ system or modality. This book provides a summary of information relevant to the interpretation of pediatric imaging studies across different modalities and within different organ systems.
Purpose: It is the authors' intent to address the "essential" knowledge required for the assessment of pediatric patients. They cover all organ systems in relevant sections and discuss appropriate imaging modalities for each diagnosis or symptom. The book provides a very manageable amount of information for its intended audience (mainly radiology residents) and provides it in a reader-friendly manner.
Audience: The authors identify radiology residents and pediatric radiology fellows as their target audience. The book is well suited to residents on their first or second rotation in pediatric radiology, but the information is not of sufficient depth for the needs of fellows in pediatric radiology. The authors present the information in a manner that makes it obvious that they have a background in resident education and needs assessment.
Features: The book covers basic principles germane to the practice of pediatric radiology, which differ from best practices in the adult population. The sections are largely divided by organ system, including GI, GU, musculoskeletal, thoracic imaging, and imaging of the neurological system. The neuroradiology section, in particular, is comprehensive and covers a variety of pathologies in the brain, head and neck, and spine. The section on tumors of the kidney, adrenals and pelvis is, by design, somewhat superficial and may have benefitted from a slightly more in-depth discussion. One very nice feature, which is particularly attractive to learners (residents) and program directors, is the section of learning objectives for each chapter. These clearly define what the learner should take from the chapter and reinforce important concepts. The self-assessment questions and self-assessment examination are also excellent and would lend themselves well to assessment of resident performance at a program level.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent book for a first or second rotation in pediatric radiology. It provides a nice summary overview of commonly seen entities in pediatric imaging appropriate for novice learners. It covers the subjects in greater depth than in Pediatric Imaging: The Fundamentals, Donnelly (Elsevier, 2009), and it is comparable to Pediatric Radiology: The Requisites, 3rd edition, Blickman et al. (Elsevier, 2006). The most attractive features of the book are the learning objectives and the self-assessment examinations.
