CHAPTER 1

Pedie had a friend.

His name was Frog.

Pedie would look for Frog when he walked around the pond.

Sometimes Frog would hide.

Sometimes Frog would wait.

Then they would touch noses.

Frog would jump away.

Pedie would splash in the water.

Pedie liked Frog and he always looked for him.

Pedie had a friend.

His name was Shadow.

Shadow was a lucky cat—he had seven toes on each of his front paws.

Pedie liked to eat Shadow's food.

Shadow liked to play with Pedie's ball.

They would nap together in the afternoon sun.

Shadow had a trick: he could open the screen door.

Then Pedie would get out to run to the pond.

This was very naughty.

Pedie liked his friend Shadow.
