Information on basic principles of pharmacology and pharmacological principles of drugs used during anesthesia and in the intensive care unit is presented in this book. A CD-ROM with practice exam questions is included. The primary purpose is to provide a concise account of the necessary pharmacology required for the Fellowship examinations for the Faculty of Royal College of Anaesthetists of England and to provide practice exam questions. The pharmacological knowledge necessary for non-anesthetists working in the ICM is also provided. Practice exams are provided to help the students prepare for the exam. This book intended for those preparing for the FFARCS (especially the primary exam but also those wishing to brush up on pharmacology for the Final), physicians who are involved in intensive care from other disciplines, and people who are involved in the care of patients in the operating room and intensive care units who want an understanding of the pharmacology involved. The book is divided into four sections: Basic Principles, Core Drugs in Anaesthetic Practice, Cardiovascular Drugs, and Other Important Drugs. The basic pharmacology section includes pharmacokinetic as well as pharmacodynamic aspects. In addition there are sections on drug interactions and isomerism. Although the book is not large (316 pages) a large amount of information on the drugs used during surgery and in the intensive care unit is provided. Most of the information is very current and correct. A few statements in the pharmacokinetic section are incorrect. The information is very concise but well organized, making it easy to find information on specific drugs or classes of drugs. The CD-ROM containsquizzes with all types of pharmacological questions. It is designed so that users receive instant feed back as to whether they got the question right or wrong along with an explanation as to why the answer is right or wrong. At the end of each exam users are provided with a score, including an analysis of how many answers were correct based on knowledge, and how many were correct that were the result of an educated guess or a complete guess. Users are given a chance to go back over the questions that presented problems. The material on all questions can be found in the book. The program is very easy to run. A lot of very useful current information is provided for students of anesthesia and non-anesthetists working in the intensive care unit. This book is definitely geared towards the British system, but should benefit anyone in anesthesia. The quiz bank computer program is very well designed, giving the student instant feedback on the right and wrong answers and why they are right or wrong. It is an excellent way to provide students some practice in preparing for the FRAC exam.
